Sam Bartram's Centenary **TODAY**

Apologies if this has already been mentioned elsewhere...

Wednesday 22nd January marks what would have been Sam Bartram's 100th birthday.

I wonder if there is any plans to mark this at the next home game? It's a shame Saturday's game against Bournemouth has been moved!

Great spot, I didn't realise it was the great mans 100th.
  • I met him and got his autograph a couple of months before he died when he attended our last home game against Gillingham when we were promoted under Mike Bailey in 1980/81.
  • So jealous of everyone who got to meet this guy and see him play (Sadly died two years before I was born)... My late grandad used to rave about him

    Happy Birthday for Wednesday Sam

Your grandad was quite right , a great keeper who was only kept out of the England team in the post war years by Frank Swift Bert Williams (who died yesterday aged 93 )and Gil merrick all in my opinion inferior to Sam . The war also interupted his chance of a cap and the amount of international games played then was very small compared to now .I was lucky to see Sam play at the Valley and I met him once when he came to judge the kids fancy dress comp at the old Charlton Liberal club in the Woolwich rd .Is it really 33 years since he died time seems to go so quick .

  • Yeah my grandad was rarely wrong on Football... He used to do Ballroom dancing (was really good too) and entered this small local competition which was beneath his level but he had to win it as Sammy was presenting the award, there is a photo of the moment round me nans somewhere

I've got two testamonial programmes from the mid seventies...

Keith Peacock against Chelsea, not sure of the exact date, we got beat 4-2, I remember Alan Hudson was outstanding..

Was at this game, (was about 10/12).
Apparently SB was in goal at half-time for a penalty competition.
If true, I was in the Covered End and I saw the great man himself at The Valley.
  • So so lucky to have met his family, particularly his daughter Moira. Married at Our Lady of Grace, played in the afternoon, then reception at the Con Club. One of my earliest memories when learning to read were his columns in the paper, my Dad asking if I knew who he was - soon found out! Never had the privilege, but always one of my earliest memories of being a Charlton fan were two words - Sam Bartram.
  • I can remember Sam writeing in his sunday column (sunday people ? ) that if Billy Bonds never plays for England he would eat his hat ! I think Billy did get an international call up but he got injured in training .
  • Yep, was the people now I think of it, second column I read!

  • Shame he's not still around, we could do with another keeper.

    Happy Birthday, Sam!

  • Having read an excellent book about him, I am pretty sure he was kept out of the England team because he was unorthordox. Fans loved him because he was entertaining and a great keeper. But he would often get the ball and go on a run, even taking opponents on - then if he lost it he'd run back to the goal. This was a regular occurance and I would have loved to have seen it - but the England selectors were less impressed.

He was a great character and a great keeper. He rightly holds a special place in our history.

  • We used to hang around outside his football shop to get a glimpse of him. I look at the shop and think about him every time I go past, it's still got the same frontage.

    Yes, that's the one
  • Last home game I was at, I spent ages talking to Sam outside the ticket office.

Do you know, he just looked the other way and ignored me.

    He's tall, isn't he?
  • In 1953/54 Sam was runner up to the great Tom Finney for Footballer of the Year even though he was 40 at the time.
  • The great mans autograph obtained in 1952

  • To answer someones question, I don't remember any songs for Sam or anyone else for that matter. In those days we all carried rattles to make noise, and of course wore a cap ! If you were small you were picked up and passed down to the front so that you could see. My Dad took me into the Dressing Room at QPR once, we went at half time and when we opened the door, smoke billowed out because literally everyone was smoking.
  • A hero of mine from way back, God bless you Sam. If I am not mistaken that is Jimmy Dickinson with Sam, Captain of Portsmouth and part of the best half back line I ever saw, Scoular, Frogatt, Dickinson.

Just watched it. I think I've got something in my eye...
  • Now this man is a club legend!

We could do with him in the team right now... we haven't got enough goalkeepers. :-)

I've got it at home, I also made a pilgrimage to Boldon to see the ground when I was with my ex, I'll see if I can dig the pictures of it out when I get home from work! He's still very well known up there, when I told her old man who I supported he was the first name he mentioned and said he was from up the road...
