Notts County will not be extending Morgan Fox's loan at Meadow Lane

Apologies if this is old news. A friend sent me this piece from the Nottingham Post, January 8th. I thought it was interesting.

Notts County will not be extending Morgan Fox's loan at Meadow Lane.

The Wales Under 21 left-back has returned to Championship club Charlton Athletic after a five-week loan at Meadow Lane. And Magpies boss Shaun Derry says he will not be coming back.

Striker Yoann Arquin could also be on his way out of the club, having been on trial at Ross County. The 25-year-old has not played for Notts since mid-November and was also a spectator as the Scottish Premier League side beat St Johnstone 1-0 on home soil last Saturday.

Charlton Under 21 captain Bradley Jordan has also gone back to The Valley with Fox, having joined Notts on loan deadline day at the end of November.

Midfielder Jordan did not play a play for the Magpies, but Fox played seven times, making six starts. He also scored the first goal of his professional career as Notts beat Colchester United 4-0 in League One in mid-December and helped them to three league wins.

"It was very hard for them to adapt to the level we are at, not so much Fox, but Bradley," said Derry. "Bradley came in and perhaps wanted to play a bigger part than he did.

"What I would say is – and fair credit to them – they came with a freshness and an attitude that really helped us as a group. "As much as there was disappointment from Bradley's angle, I'm hoping he will go away better for the experience of being out of his comfort zone and for Fox he came in and played in three wins so that's great for him. "He'll want to get out on loan again, but we're looking at different options."

Comments

  • Interesting comments, sounds like this loan was a step too far at this stage of their career, but good experience overall. Hopefully it will not adversely affect their confidence.

    That's probably right, but much more so for Jordan than Fox. I received this comment with the link to the Nottingham Post article;

"Saw Morgan Fox at Crawley and was quite impressed. He appeared calm and always had time on the ball despite Crawley having an effective pressing game and kept his game together despite Notts being very poor overall. I suspect that he was returned because our need is greater elsewhere, but I'd have been happy to see him continue."

  • I don't think comments like this will help them to be honest. Maybe I've read this the wrong way but it sounds as if Derry is saying their both not good enough.

Fox played 7 times in 3 different positions. If they didn't fancy him then why would they play him in 3 different positions?

    A bit strange to me.
  • It will obviously be better for Morgan than Jordan, the local rag comment will be good for Morgan and the positive will be that both players were involved on a day to day basis with the first team squad. Long term I think it is good short term both may take it a s a knock. Get them out to League 2 or Conference asap to build on it rather than wallow. Also, lets not forget they joined a relegated team in relegation fight again, so possibly not the most positive environment for them ... but character building!!
  • I reckon Morgan Fox did himself proud but they are on a limited budget (sound familiar?) and need to strengthen elsewhere. Feel sorry for Bradley - he needs game time and there is very little value in going out on loan unless that has a decent chance of happening.
  • Sounds like they did a job but now the transfer window is open they'll be looking to get better / permanent and more experience in. Fair enough.
  • Fair play to Morgan Fox. He's solid yet unspectacular and will probably go on to be a steady-Eddie in the game.

I'd hope he won't be one that craves the public attention and just "Winterburn's" his way through the game.

It also reads like Bradley expected to play and was, perhaps, no better than what they had. I hope I'm wrong but it reads a little like he thought he would be a star in their squad, which is an attitude that is normally associated with millionaire teenagers from the Premier League.

We can't have it both ways - we bring players in on loan and expect them to be cover for our first team players (that are contacted to us). Realistically, players that can't get close to our first team when we are struggling at the bottom of the Championship are unlikely to walk straight onto, and be a star for, a team just one division below us.
  • Title is misleading.

Fox played every game, Bradley didn't.

Nothing wrong with the lad showing a bit of confidence in his ability. He hasn't been Charltonised yet. :)

Agree. Notts County are mired in a desperate relegation battle and need experience and sheer bloody grit to get them out of it.

Fox was loaned to cover their experienced LB, Sheehan - who was injured at the time.

Interestingly, when Sheehan was fit again, he went straight back into the team at LB - and Fox moved to LM, from where he scored his 1st League goal.

Then in the same game, Sheehan got himself sent off late in that game, Fox reverted to LB and kept his place while Sheehan served his suspension.
