Your friends down the road.

Thought some of you may be interested in an update from our match yesterday and how a Team around you in the table are looking under their new Manager.

Millwall brought more fans than I thought they would, not sure of the exact figures but a decent turn-out. Holloway started his tenure by running all the way down the touch line to the away-end to clap his new disciples who responded. Typical Holloway 'theatre'.

Match starts and one larger than life Millwall fan with his green barbour and shades on (it's January 11th) clambers across the seats giving it the big one from the off. A quiet word from the West Yorkshire Police and that was him sorted for the match. Other than that, they sung well and there was no 'edge' to the atmosphere.

On the pitch, we were 'pedestrian', plenty of possession but didn't do anything creative or effective with it (which is unlike us of late). Millwall were very well organised and fairly comfortable throughout to be fair. The game had '0-0' written all over it. They were never going to win the match and the consistent time-wasting of their Goalie (under the instruction of Holloway) told us all they had come for a point (don't you just love it when a Team whose Goalie is time wasting go a goal down and then all of a sudden they can't get rid of the ball upfield quick enough!). A point they deserved until a moment of quality decided the match.

Based on their recent results, Holloway has had an impact it would appear and their Players seemed up for it. In my opinion, they will climb the table and not be in the mix for relegation. That Shittu, as big a lump as he is, he was very effective and mopped everything up at he back. He may not be the most mobile but has got good positional sense.

That cannot be the same Team that has been shipping goals for fun, a corner will be turned with the 'Holloway factor'.

Anyway, sure the result was to your liking!.

On a separate note, I am surrounded by Leeds fans who are in 'meltdown' at the moment. Kebe and Stewart have been heralded by McDermott as the signings that will change their season, they both started yesterday..............

Was that Stewart any good at your place?.

  • Too much of an assesment, noone actually cares as long as they lose!

On another note nice to see Wells get of to a good start, wish we could have signed him as he is quality and suprised its taken someone this long to sign him at this level
  • Stewart is a typical winger. Blows hot and cold, comes in an out of games. Can score a worldie here and there but at other times you won't even know he's playing.

Think yesterday in terms of Millwall it was a case of new manager effect. They will be in a relegation fight and that 90th min goal will certainly knock a bit of wind out of the new regime.

    Fair enough, point taken!.

Wells hardly touched the ball in the circa 25 minutes he was on the pitch, mainly due to our lack of creativity. We have though been crying out for a goal poacher, and that's what he did, took a chance on a possible defensive error which was made and there he was, waiting to pounce. It's a signing that I think has had the fans of other Clubs take note and think; "how are the likes of Huddersfield making signings like that and we're not!?".

Would you have signed Stewart given the chance?.
  • I probably would have mate, but only because he's better what we currently have and he's got the ability to do something from nothing. I'm not sure in Leeds case it's a great signing, as with their budget they could probably get someone better.

Thanks for the update Gary, was asking as will be having a beer at the (Leeds) local later and will be able to offer a view from a Charlton fan (or fans) who have seen him play regularly as I am sure he is being judged already based on yesterday!.

No probs. I'm pretty sure he divided opinion on here and in the ground. There's no denying his excellent technical ability but he can be lazy and seem a little uninterested. I just take that as text book winger mentality.
  • Great , I feared the scum would be too good to be down there
especially with Holloway to sort them out and our Hudders friend has confirmed it, let's hope we're both bad judges
  • Football is as much about a team playing with confidence. They may be lifted and better organised but you still have to get over the first hurdle and get a win. Ipswich at theirs next another similar team to hudders in strength. As we found out make a mistake to them at home and it could be another 1 goal deficit. The first 3 games under Holloway were/are all possible point gainers (H Ipswich & Sheff Wed), then it gets harder again H Reading A Burnley.

    Lets wait and see.
  • Holloway is I think experienced enough to produce a team set up not to lose but the problem with that of course is that you then don't ever look like winning either. If he can steady the ship by not conceding too many and build on that then they should be fine but I don't see him being able to win too many with one notable exception of course.

  • If he can achieve that your probably right they will dig themselves out of trouble, but do they have a squad for that type of approach. On paper they have a stronger squad than us but we have workman like type players that fit the go out not to lose style. CP knows we are in a dog fight and set his stool out over Xmas to gain something from each game without taking risks Sheff W game for instance. I'm not sure the Millwall players have grasped whats required so far.
  • I have said in the lomas sacked holloway appointed thread, that the spanners won 8 league games in 2013. I can't see that form changing.
  • They will be strengthening though. Berylson has already said that he will support Holloway in the transfer market. I doubt it will be pretty but they will have enough to avoid the bottom three.
  • Yep, On the face of it the bottom 3 look most likely, although, if we don't get some more fire power in we will be flirting with the disaster ourselves. I would imagine someone is going to stay up on the least amount of points for a season.

  • Improved performances that still result in losses are just fine with me :) Can't see beyond the current bottom three though.
  • I'd be shocked if Holloway doesn't save them.mthey aren't going down.

Wtf is wrong with you? The guy has gone to the effort of writing a report on our local/relegation rivals and this is your response?
  • Not surprised they couldn't score though seeing as they must of been shuffling around the pitch what with necklaces made from their own kneecaps!
  • vffvff

Well done for beating Millwall. Their defeat yesterday, along with the missed Puncheon penalty for Palace and defeats for Doncaster and Yeovil were the only bright spots of yesterday.

I bet you must have enjoyed the 6-0 demolition of Leeds yesterday as well as you are based there.

Holloway may not be the best manager in the world, but he will likely stabilise Millwall sufficiently enough for them not to get relegated, unfortunately. They have a top keeper in Forde, and if Holloway can stop them conceeding, they will likely gather enough points with the strikers they have on the books.
  • Agreed. The Spanners will not be relegated with Holloway unfortunately.

  • Disagree, the spanners are going down.
  • Sweet result, last minute defeat and local hero, Nahki Wells scoring the winner on his Championship debut.

That said, can't say I'm thrilled at the prospect of seeing loads of Huddersfield shirts in Bermuda. I was just getting my head around the whole Bradford City thing.............
  • That Wells goal scored me £320 in my accumulator. It's brilliant seeing Millwall lose without money at stake.

Made our postponement feel less important.
  • In response to a few posts, thanks for the replies and yes, it was good to see Leeds get a hiding as it makes my life easier!. The locals I have been in today, it was like a wake. The natives are extremely restless and with Leicester at home on Saturday then Brighton away, where is their next result going to come from?. I personally think McDermott is running out of time (I like the Guy by the way).

Re Wells, that well taken strike will settle him down and hopefully set him on his way. He has signed for four and a half years but I expect him to be here for a couple then seal a big money move to the Premiership.

There is nothing like a last minute winner is there!, it made the weekend all the better that's for sure.
