'Network of clubs' debate

Like we have seen at Watford over the last couple of years, it is a strong possibility we may see similar here at Charlton over the next year or two.

Any thoughts ?

Happy with the potential bulk loan movement of players between a network of clubs ?

  • As long as all the good prospects come to us and none of our better players go the other way...
  • Wouldn't mind if the clubs we are taking the loans from are half decent.Standard Liege would not fall into that category for me I'm afraid.
  • I'd prefer it if we didnt become the Belgian version of Watford
  • I wrote an article a while back - not that I ever promoted it anywhere - on my views of the Pozzo's footballing cartel. I don't begrudge Watford fans for enjoying their success (not that they seem to be having so much of it since I wrote the article), and I won't be in the slightest way upset if we end up enjoying a great wealth and success through adopting a similar system, but my point still stands, football isn't like a normal market, I don't think it is right for individuals to have ownership of multiple professional football clubs, irregardless of what league or country they are in, because it sets a dangerous precedent for the future of football as we know it:

  • Wouldn't we be the second strongest side within our new family of teams. I would suggest that we will be doing more of the loaning out of players than loaning in.

As others have said though... when it comes down to the financial bare bones... the Premier League is gonna be a lot more lucrative than the Belgian Pro League especially if Roland's long-term aim is to get us into the Champions League (lol! Now that I just could see happening)

Not to mention that a model similar to the Pozzo's is to keep all 3 teams sustainable and playing at the highest level by working in unison, not by pilfering players - well not yet.
  • The Pozzos own a club in two of the four strongest leagues in the world, and Watford have been the beneficiary thereof - in short, any player on the fringe of the Udinese or Granada squad is going to be good enough for the Championship, all other things being equal.

I don't think you can say the same about Duchatelet's clubs. It is interesting to note that Anderlecht (last season's Belgian champions) came bottom of a mediocre Champions League group with -13 goal difference.

For me that makes the top of the Belgian league roughly equivalent to the bottom third of the Premiership (that is how I would expect say WBA or Norwich to perform in the Champions League). Of course his other clubs are considerably worse.
  • As long as it is more beneficial than the link ups we had with Valencia and Inter Milan.

That depends on his overall goals for the group of clubs, and assumes in turn that he is indeed viewing them as a group and not simply looking to run them on their own merits. He may just be a reckless egotist looking for some excitement, who knows?

However if one assumes he is taking a consolidated view of things and moreover is somewhat rational, then a pure financial target might be to maximise total group earnings over some reasonable period (or at least minimise total group losses!). If so then the riches on offer in the Premiership may well make Charlton infact the 'lead' club in the group, even if Liege are on course for a Champions League spot (our Premiership revenues would far outweigh Liege's revenues even with a CL bonus added in).

    .

Certainly was in most cases last season with Vydra and Abdi particularly but not really so much this time - probably because we've been found out under Zola due to losing the former whilst the latter has been injured since August.

Also the new players this season have either not really been played or suffered from injuries (defender who gave penalty away against you guys for example is out long term..)

Naturally any player will have to adapt to what the Championship brings which is where we've maybe come up sort in the signings recently.

  • so how many players can we loan in from abroad?

"It means only five players loaned from overseas can be named in matchday squads with just four from a single club – there will also be a maximum of eight players brought in on loan throughout the course of a campaign."

unless they have changed the rules since last season, then as many as we want. I think foreign loans count as transfers and not loans so you can do as many as you wish. Thats why Watford were able to use so many of them and thats what annoyed Holloway last season.
  • I think its limited to 2 per club now hence us only have 1 from Granada and 1 from Udinese.

Plus the domestic loan players like Thorne (West Brom) and Bellerin |(Arsenal)

I really doubt Norwich or WBA could win the Belgian title though.
