Have Charlton fans fallen out of Love with the FA Cup?

Charlton’s recent announcement that only Lower West and North would be open has caused some dismay to Charlton fans

CAS Trust has written to Charlton asking for clarification on the business case for not opening other stands like the East stand.
The current situation will allow for only 7,500 home fans squeezed into 2 sides of the ground, leaving one whole side empty and further devoid of atmosphere, and catering queues even longer than normal, it will also be harder for fans to sit together as they might do with season tickets .
Fans are concerned on the effect this will have on the negative effect this will have on the importance of the FA cup, to both fans, club and team, and what knock on effect this might have to further diminish turnout.

Or is this just an attempt to get more hits on the Trust site?

  • I always looked upon cup games as a chance to get a different perception on the game. How can the queues be any longer than they would be if the stand was full anyway?
Surely it would be more like the prem days of full houses!
Talking of different view points, I sat right next to the dug outs for one game, I think it was a friendly versus ipswich, and the view was terrible especially from a managers POV, wouldn't they be better off sitting higher in the ground to see the whole field of play and relaying messages down?
  • I think the club, or managers and teams at least, fell out of love with the FA Cup long before the fans did.
If the fans have lost interest they can hardly be blamed seeing as our cup record is so poor, particularly in our Prem years.

2013 moves into 2014 seamlessly for some on here......
  • I think this is being blown out of proportion. Im not sure about fans 'squeezing' into the stands... you make it sound like people will be sharing seats !.
  • No. Just the club's attitude to it by always playing a reserve side who then put in a pitiful performance (year after year).
  • Won't be on anyway.
  • Save our pitch
    Cancel the game!
  • Always hated 2nd/3rd Round day at the Valley. The club has consistently taken the piss out of us the supporters for too many years with 2nd string teams and poor poor performances. And, for too many years I took the opportunity to round up a good few people to take along who otherwise would not be bothered to go to a live football match, guess what? 9 times out of 10 Charlton Athletic have failed to deliver and they and me slunk way unimpressed and disappointed.

Give Oxford a bye and save the prick ache Charlton.
  • As others have already said, for donkeys years Charlton have put in pitiful FA Cup performances. 2006 was our last decent run and not even sure what year the run before that was. For a side who've mainly been in the top 2 divisions, that is dire.

So a tie at home to a lower league side, who we've already played this season, on that pitch at a time of year when many will be skint, it's hardly a surprise if people give it a miss.

  • 2000 fans in 7500 seats
    Hardly a sqeeze
  • tbh, charlton dont really value any cups. 2 stands is not that bad. if we went throught to the 4th round then obviously if it was ahoem tie we will open all 4 stands.
  • I can't be there but to be honest probably would not have gone anyway. We have been so poor in the cup for a number of years and no doubt will rest a number of the first team. Not that I disagree with that, I would rather safety than a cup run. It's a pity this wasn't away as if the game goes ahead the pitch will get so cut up, I dread to think what it will be like for the Barnsley game on the 11th.
  • I posted the below after we got put out of the FA Cup this time last year by Huddersfield. Will no doubt be equally relevant after the Oxford match when, once again, we get put out by a lower division club.

OK after a heavy Christmas period, and with a God awful pitch, I can understand playing some reserves this time but a complete reserve team, which I can see happening?

Any new answers to the opening question below gratefully received.

"Serious question. Why are we so utterly c**p in Cup Competitions?

It’s over 45 years now since I first visited the Valley and in that time in the FA Cup we have had 3 runs where we have reached the Quarter Final – Moan Utd in 1994, Bolton in 2000 and Middlesbro’ in 2006. Ok, there were also the good day outs for 5th round matches at Wolves in 1976, Ipswich in 1981 & Liverpool in 1996 but that’s it (apart from managing to lose at home to Leicester in the 5th round in 2005).

It’s a truly pathetic record. Year after year we have gone out in the 3rd round or just after, often to teams in Divisions below us, with the nadir surely being our defeat to Northwich Victoria – one of the most incompetent displays I have ever seen from a Charlton team. Frankly, it doesn’t seem to matter what players are in our starting 11 in a Cup game – be they the stars from our Premiership days or the dross from Phil Parkinson’s days – they just don’t perform in Cup games.

And to rub it in even further, even Smallwall and Palarse have managed to reach a Cup Final in this time.

As for the League Cup, blimey don’t even start me on that. The only time I believe we have ever got past the 4th round, we managed to lose “gloriously” to Wycombe when we were in the Premiership and Wycombe were 2 or 3 Divisions below us! And if we have lost to some rubbish teams in the FA Cup, Lord knows we have lost to even worse teams in this competition.

Frankly, I am getting completely pi**ed off with this. It’s not funny anymore. We deserve better.

So what are we to do? Firstly, it’s about bl**dy time the management started taking the cups seriously and play the first team, not a load of reserves and youngsters. I am fed up reading so and so is tired needs to be rested – these are athletes in the prime condition of their lives who surely must be able to play 2 games in a week.

Secondly, stop this obsession that the League is the only thing that matters. Let’s be honest – the only chance the club has got of winning a major piece of silverwear (not the Championship or Division 1 trophy) is the FA Cup or League Cup. Surely, the chance of a never to be forgotten day out at Wembley is something worth aiming for.

Thirdly, with everyone so disillusioned with our Cup form – was it just over 6000 in attendance today? - the club needs to do something to encourage fans to attend. (I rarely miss a home league match but just can’t be bothered now to attend cup games). How about free admission to season ticket holders for one game a year in each Cup competition? That would probably encourage more to go and help create a better atmosphere.

Sorry for the rant but this early exit from the FA Cup once again has really pi**ed me off big time. Thanks for listening!"
  • So, exactly what areas are open on Sat?
  • Were Charlton fans ever actually in love with the FA Cup?
  • So, exactly what areas are open on Sat?

North Lower and West Lower. Take a brolly.
  • In response to the original question = Yup.
  • says "significantly reduce cost".

Would be good to have some figures to back that up

The unknown will be how many, if any, fans choose to not attend as they can't use their usual seat.

  • Thanks for sharing the programme notes. I understand the Club's decision completely. However, I don't agree with it and I won't be going. The Club has made its choice and me mine.,

Not so much my usual seat, just a decent one with reasonable view and protected from the elements.

Maidstone will be on so that's where I'll be.

    more here

We fell out of love with it when the club stopped taking it seriously. Last year was an utter joke.
  • feel free to make a comment on the trust site accordingly.

Anyone know what the stand arrangements were for Huddersfield 0-1 cup defeat?

    http://www.cafc.co.uk/news/article/20130105-hudds-fa-cup-report-580437.aspx?pageView=full#anchored

I think many were highly doubtful of a result at the time, plus the link shows attendance was low, just over 6000 Charlton fans.

I think the last FF was cancelled, I do recall on previous occasions when I have attended (other board members often attend) we have discussed the problem, and to not have a positive approach to this game is a little disappointing.

Powell changed the majority of the team from the previous week in a game we should have been going out to win. He didn't take it seriously so I don't know why fans are expected to this year.

Yeah, and you made a thinly veiled criticism of The Trust/Razil on there as well.

Give it a rest man, you're starting to look foolish.

Let The Trust get on with it and you stick to auctioning bobbly football shirts for your museum.
  • Were Charlton fans ever actually in love with the FA Cup?

    Yeah, Old Trafford 1994......

And you just made a nasty insult to me and the auctions for the upbeats. Did it make you feel a big man? Water off a ducks back to me but you hardly do yourself any credit.

There was no thinly veiled criticism of the trust. I criticise openly and honestly. I don't hide behind snide remark about unrelated subjects such as "bobbly football shirts". If the shirts are bobbly it's because the other fans donated them in that state. That was generous of them and helped the upbeats and a number of other good causes including the museum. What did you do to help?

I think there is no reason for two threads started by the same person on the same topic at the same time other than to get more hits. And Razil clearly agrees now as he asked for the thread to be closed. QED

No need for that at all.

Did I mention The Upbeats? No,but insinuating that I did was a cheap attempt to support your lame argument.

I choose to support The Boys and girls of Deptford because their cause isn't as conspicuous and - as a result - will not attract as much support I'd imagine.

You need to stop being so prissy.

It was only a matter of weeks ago you were tearing into Razil with regard to The Trust which only served to compound the impression that you are resentful of the emergence of people who have the potential to be more influential with Charlton than yourself.

On reflection, the 'bobbly shirts' comment was churlish - carry on the good work - the rest stands...
