One Goal Makes All the Difference

In games that we haven't won this season there are 13 games where we drew or lost by one goal. In all of these games if we had scored one more goal we would now have 18 more points.

A big IF I know but.......

Comments

  • If we had scored one goal at elland road we would have gone up automatically and Parkinson would have then taken us to prem in back to back seasons. Maybe ....
  • If I had won the lottery I could go and watch Barcelona every week.
  • If my granny had bollocks she would be my Granddad.
  • lol all these replies but I get what LL is trying to say. We're near the bottom of the table but we're not getting tonked every week. Just a tiny little bit of extra quality would make a huge difference to our team and that's frustrating.
  • It's all about whoever gets the first goal. We can defend a lead as good as anyone, but getting back into a game is a different matter.
  • If, but and maybe, what a ridiculous post !!
  • Yeah, a couple of breaks and we'd be looking at a different table. Football is full of it though, every team will have this every season. We just seem to have a few more ifs this time around, and small margins change games.
  • The table doesn't lie. We have played badly in far too many games this season. We have been beaten by the odd goal but have been well beaten all over the pitch frequently.
  • .........whereas we would have 11 points less if we had scored one less goal in all the games we scored in.

  • How do you draw by one goal?
  • think I'll give up on this forum, I try and make a sensible point and all I seem to get in the majority is inane replies
so you can stick it where the sun doesn't shine
I'll do the stats but that's it
this used to be a really good fans forum where sensible discussion could be had but that seems to be in the past
so go on moderators give me lots of flags as this site is becoming another Facebook which I left due to it's inanity
  • What it does tell us LL, which many on here are ignoring in the rush to ridicule you (even if we ignore the fact that we can't change the past) is that there is not as much for us to do to turn future defeats into draws/draws into wins.

Your analysis is worth the effort even if it's only for that.

Taking into account (which I think is, potentially, more useful) is that of our 9 defeats 6 of those teams are in the top ten and of the other three one was Millwall (which doesn't count as we can't beat them) and the other two were the first two games of the season when we had only just signed two strikers.

In fact if we look at the results since we lost 3-0 at Burnley (who were on fire at the time) we have lost away 1-0 to two of last seasons relegated sides, 4-2 to Leeds in a crazy game where their four goals were scored by a player that cost more than our whole squad and Ipswich.

I am confident that as we play more of the mid-table sides and those struggling we will pick up more points (we are very hard to score against) and if we were losing 3-0 most weeks then your analysis would conclude that my prediction is stupid.

LL, it has always been easier to poke fun at those that have the intelligence, and inclination, to carry out analytical work like you did. I would just ignore them - I'm sure there are more like me that appreciate stats and those that take the time to collate them.

Perfectly reasonable observation pointing out we have not been that far off getting extra points out of a lot of games. Maybe the second half of the season might turn in our favour who knows what changes in personnel there might be. Don't make any snap decisions Lancs, sleep on it, your contributions not only on the Statbank but other topics are valued by many on here. As Bournemouth said the other day he needed a time out recently and has come back refreshed the same as I did in the summer.
