Players Contract Theory

Does anyone else think that what is happening is...

TJ is looking at selling so wants to give the buyers the chance to buy the club knowing that they will not be stuck paying any players contracts that they don't want to be there.

So effectively if owners come in with a bit of money to spend, they have a blank canvas to start working on and can sign up on new contracts the players that they feel are worth keeping and paying a wage, and can release the rest.

Just a thought, and I think I might be right...

Don't think they're as forward thinking as that. I think it's more of a case they don't want to do mass contract renewals and add to the £800k a month wage bill that 'they' continue (struggle?) to pay.

Obviously they stump up cash though a la Cousins and Solly when they feel it's necessary - not sure how that makes others feel though. Especially someone like Chris who is now earning more cash and is unlikely to play again...

    ....before Jan/Feb.
  • More likely he doesn't want to get players signed up on new contracts because he's potless and can't afford it/doesn't want to borrow any more. He's hoping he can sell and the new owners can put their hands in their pockets to sort the contract issues out.
  • Seems like TJ wins both ways. He pays out less now and can offer prospective buyers more flexibility. If FFP actually works then you want to get rid of unwanted players asap as any outlay, whether it be for wages or paying off a contract, will count against you and reduce your options for getting in new players.
  • What WSS said. It's having a very detrimental effect on player morale though.

  • There is another point.

With so many contracts running out at the same time, the owners (whoever that may be) can choose to renew contracts at the level that the club is at.

If we were to get relegated, contracts could,be renewed at League 1 levels.

I hope no-one is naive enough to think that, if the players contracts were renewed at the present level, and we (by some miracle) got promoted to the Premier League there wouldn't be a queue around the block of players demanding improved contracts?
  • I partly agree that this could be the reason

Although it could also be the fact that the takeover could still fall through and the current owners could be left with players on Contracts that they cant afford to pay.
