Is this the worst strike force ever ?

  • Paul gorman..

Gorman was ok nowhere near the dross level.
  • Paul Gorman, signed from Fisher, had a good goalscoring average with us,
sadly injury finished his career. Stupid to rank him with the dross, (McLeod, Small etc).

Maybe not dross but a goal every five games isn't good for a striker. (according to records I found 8 in 40)

Fair comment Stoney but can you give us some stats on Abbott, Plumb and McLeod (who I omitted) in the second tier or above of English footy please.

Pawel Abott and Akpo Sodje are our worst ever striker in my opinion. Worse than Bradley Allen even.

Not disputing your claim, just JWC's claim that his goalscoring record was GOOD. Gorman was OK.
  • Agreed :-)
  • Sorry but this thread is silly. Worse than that- it's extremely silly. The football we're playing at the moment would destroy any striker's reputation. What do you expect, Roy of the Rovers, gets the ball in his own penalty area, dribbles past 8 men, rounds the goalie and slides the ball into the net? It's not as though Church has squandered lots of sitters, he's playing in a long-ball team which fails to put pressure on opposition defenses, and hits lots of hopeful high lobs forward. Strikers should not be made scapegoats for the poor quality of our attacking football. Look at poor Joe Pigott, destroyed by this forum after one bad game then sent back to the stiffs. Fair enough to slag off someone like JFH, who was fat, lazy and didn't try, but Church is someone I've really warmed to, on account of his honest effort under impossible circumstances.
  • Ok then, so just WHO is to blame for our current demise in front of goal ??

    1) the strikers ??

    2) the midfield / wingers for not supplying them ??

    3) the coaching staff for not coaching them right ??

    4) the management team for selecting the above / conducting the training / selecting the formations ??

    5) the owners for not giving CP the money in June/July to buy quality players ??
  • Golfie stop it please you are being logical :0)

Invite him round for tea then. I don't want him anywhere near our Club thank you.

Wiggins 5/10 in the players marks, Mooney back, what happened to spring? Is it April 1st already?
  • Richard Wilson wasn't great...

Good link I like it :-)
  • Thanks for your responses, you have come up with such a collection of misfits that I now would like to know why is it such a bad picture ? Is it just money, CP has been with us a fair time now and has managed to get defenders pretty right. Do we need a coach with more attacking flair ?

Most of these above were before CP's time!
I think it's more of a case that being a defender by trade, CP is a better judge of what it takes to defend and as such can pick up bargains. A really good striker on the other hand is likely to cost a lot of money, with of course the honourable exception of Kermorgant - but even there Powell knew him from Leicester so it wasn't totally out of left field.
  • Powell managed to find Kermo, Haynes, Fuller and BWP.

I think it is more to do with lack of money that lack of coaching, attacking flair or knowledge.

Mr. Church gambolling like a Spring lamb, going nowhere. Mr.Sordell giving us another fruitless cameo. Only Yann looking good on his own. Frankly, I don't care if Michael Smith is not ready, he can't be any worse than those two. The thought of our current attacking performances makes me glad that I have to work Tuesday evening. Anyone up for watching paint dry ?

Church is decent but not getting any service and probably not suited to playing up on his own,he at least works really hard in stark contrast to the shameful Sodall who takes his place in the list of very worst p!sstakers to have dirtied a Charlton shirt, he has a smidgen of ability in front of goal but makes Carlton cole and JFH look like Scott Parker and Mark Kinsella in terms of effort. Sodall should have been sent back after 3 games and sued for misrepresentation - his kind of attitude stains the whole game. Any "strikeforce" with him in it ranks as one the worst ever.
  • The current strike force would have to go some to be worse than when we played a couple of games with Kim Grant alongside Phil Chapple as an emergency striker. Doesn't get much worse than that. No idea what the games were, although Sunderland away is ringing a bell.

Well, do you like him or not?!
  • Simon Church is a good player in my opinion, but as others have said he cannot play up front on his own. Most strikers would struggle as it stands with a lack of support and service. A fully fit Yann coming back will make a big difference.

I do not think anyone can argue that we need someone in to bolster the strike force.

Would be odd if a Welsh full international, an England U-21 international and a striker quite possibly the best header of a football in the division constituted the worst strikeforce we've ever had.

I think Suarez and Aguero would struggle for goals if they played in our side.
  • Well for me McCloud was probably the worst I have seen for some while mainly because of what he cost and his lack of effort and for the same reason Marcus Bent a proper big time Charlie who thought he was way better than he actually was.

On the subject of Church for me he is a channel runner not a target man so he needs to ball on the floor so he can get past defenders. Granted he is no Ronaldo but from what I observe we are not giving him any decent service for him to feed off. As for Sordell I haven't seen much from him at all on the evidence of what I have seen we would have been better off keeping Bradley Wright Phillips.

How about Carl Leaburn as the lone striker with Brendan O'Connell behind him "in the hole". Surely another ill=fated "pairing"

Was that the night we were huffing and puffing against a 10-man Huddersfield, and Shaun Newton scored with a 25 yard header? (!)
