Hearing a goal

Hearing a goal from outside the ground should be annoying, but there's actually something amazing about it. I think I've only experienced it two or three times, but I'll never forget the goal we scored against Spurs in 1999. There was awful traffic and kick-off might even have been delayed, but there were still loads of people outside the ground with the game kicked off. You could hear the rising and falling murmer of the crowd. Then it got markedly louder, followed by a sudden hush, as if everyone was simultaneously sucking in their breath for a second. That was followed straight away by the thunder of the roar. Suddenly we were all running, which, with hindsight, was pretty pointless unless you could run faster than time itself. As I got to the turnstiles 'The Reds are staying up!' was booming out and people all around were joining in. We got thrashed and subsequently relegated, but it is still one of my great football memories.
I also missed our fourth goal at Wembley, but that was my own fault, as I threw the toys out of the pram when we went 4-3 down. I bumped into my brother in the bowels of the stadium and we were still sulking down there when we equalised. Once again we did the irrational running thing. Coming out at the top of the steps to see a sea of red and white flags waving was quite something.
Anyone had similar experiences?

  • I remember I went to Norwich one year and left early cos I thought it would be a dull 0-0 and Svensson (I think) scored for Norwich as I was walking up the road talking with a real nice Norwich fan
  • I hear it loads as I'm only across the road from Crawley Town!

3 goals against Palace in the 1999/2000 season, haven't forgiven brother for leaving season tickets in mums car (and us having to go to ticket office to get replacements) and missing them being happy for all of a couple of minutes before suddenly finding themselves 2-1 down.
  • I heard us equalise outside against Wolves a couple of years ago on a very rare occasion we left early, we got into the car well chuffed and only heard they had scored an even later winner when halfway home after 20 mins plus back slapping and celebrating, that was a gutter and one I remember when I see them in League One!
  • As a young boy before I went to Charlton regularly, I used to know how many goals Charlton had scored because the sound wave from the Valley following a home goal would carry over the Village and across Shooters Hill to my back garden on Wricklemarsh Road. I would come in at 4.50 to check I had got it right and invariably did. I now live less than 200 yards from the ground and you can't hear a goal because of the stands and roofs.
  • I'll never forget the Millwall 4-4 game a couple of years back, and at half time my Dad passed out, leading to us being taken up to the medical room. Next thing, Bailey smashes it in and me and Dad were standing on the bed peeking through the smallest window I've ever seen, even though he was well advised to take it easy.
  • Used to go to Blackheath for the rugby regularly. Always a thrill when, if the wind is in the right direction to hear the Valley go up when we score. Even from a couple of miles away gets the blood pumping and the hairs standing on end, football eh?
  • Missed Villa's goal 98 as I was climbing the stairs at the time............wasn't that impressed by the noise considering we scored.
  • i remember being late for a prem match and i was walking down highcombe road and heard a roar. i was pretty pissed off that i missed a goal but was also awed by the noise which had carried up from the valley to there. sent a shiver down my spine.
  • Really bad traffic a couple of years ago away to Brentford and having parked up around 3.10pm I was running around the ground to the away turnstiles when a big roar goes up.........knew straight away Brentford had scored.

Also missed Chelsea's first goal on the beach.....was at least in the Stadium for that one.

Missed one at home.........ZZ's 2nd half strike against ???? - had to take my daughter to the loo even though I had only asked her at half time if she wanted to go !!! She doesn't come along anymore.

  • I think most of us missed Jim Melrose's opening at Upton Park when he scored after 15 seconds or something like that.
  • In a similar vein, there's few things worse in football than the sound and sight of away fans celebrating a goal.
Unless the away fans are Charlton, as in this video (which I bloody love).

Missed dale stephens wonder goal against bury a couple of years ago as i left early but actually was standing by the exits smoking waiting for my mates.

I have given up smoking now.
  • i missed the blackburn goal about 3 weeks ago
  • That`s a long way to go and miss the only goal of the game!
  • Missed the first two goals of the four nil at tranmere, was a lull in the game went down to get a cup of tea and chunky kit kat for myself and porkpie. I think the girl must have been picking the teas the time it took her to pour it. Heard cheer, sprinted up the stairs to see players celebrating Lloyd Sams goal. Went back down to collect the now made tea and heard the second cheer of Semedo scoring. Least we scored two more.

Been in the loo a couple of times and missed a goal but never outside the ground itself. A few seasons back, I made a habit of it. It was bizarre, something like 3 out of 5 games in a row we scored when I was stood at the urinal. :-)

Think that's one of my favourite videos on YouTube. Love it.
  • My boy was mascot at the old Highbury, by the time he got his tracksuit on in the tunnel after kick off we were 2 down, bitterly cold, 2-0 in 5 mins, nearly got magnetised by the warmth of the car heater but took our seats to watch a 2-1 defeat and nearly nick an equaliser.
We were 5th in the prem at the time......
  • Missed loads by having a slash, the most memorable being Bartlett's against Leicester. Went to Hull with Tavern years ago. He drove and we left to avoid the traffic with about 5 minutes to play as we were 1 0 down. Missed 3 goals, and we ended up drawing 2 2.

The worst however was being chucked out at wembley in the play off game and just as I came out of sight of the pitch, Mendonca scored the first goal.

& this although to be fair I don't remember seeing hardly any of the game once we got in anyway.

  • DM Was that a punch up in the seats at play off final, few around me early on
  • Yes, got caught up in it when my mates pregnant sister was in the middle.
  • We left a game early, Charlton were 3-1 up I think (on another thread I think someone told me it was Southend). We heard the cheering of more goals and assumed we'd won 5 or 6-1. Turned out it was 4-3.

I remember the kind of opposite of 'hearing a goal' - the 'not knowing about a goal'. I saw a Bromley game which Bromley won 1-0 thanks to a first minute goal. At the end of the game, someone I know shouted at the players "Bloody rubbish, can't even beat a bottom of the league side". He had arrived a couple of minutes late and had thought he had witnessed a 0-0 draw. He also wondered why Bromley were being so cagey in the last 10 minutes.
  • not a Charlton game but I remember a game at Wembley in the 80's where we left early to beat the crowds with someone cruising at 4 or 5 up. Heard a roar on Wembley way and remember my Dad said that must be the final whistle. Then another roar.. oh, maybe a goal then final whistle... then another one... and another one... turned out whoever it was held on to win 4-3 or 5-4. Must of been about 7 or 8 at the time so mid 80's. Will have to ask the old man see if he remembers the game!

Sounds like Chelsea v Middlesborough in Full Members Cup. Chelsea won 5-4 I think?
  • Went to Watford years ago, arrived at Watford Junction and then walked to the ground. We had to walk all the way round the allotments and just as we got to the turnstile a big cheer goes up.

Had to be a home goal, got in the ground and we were one down to a Iwan Roberts goal.

Eventually lost 2-1 with Paul Gorman scoring for us.

Full Members cup - that was it! Chelsea 5-4 Man City '86.
