Help Please

Hi,
Firstly I am a PNE fan and have been to The Valley a couple of times and have even seen us win!
I write to ask your community for a bit of help with regards to old Charlton and potential for photographs.
My late mother in law was raised in an orphanage from age 3 near Bolton and we have recently received information that her family lived at:

13 Ransom rd Charlton, SE7 circa 1935

Unfortunately the 11 children were left motherless at an early age and the father couldn't cope.
The family name was Collins and I am trying to find photographs of the houses but looks like the area has been developed. The road from the ground seems to go under the railway line but I couldn't tell if it continues.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

  • Roland, I've taken your home details off the post purely for reasons of security. Can never be too careful nowadays.

I suggest if anybody can help you they contact you via the Inbox function (which you'll find at the top right of the page).
  • OK thanks wondered where it had gone!

No help on photos I'm afraid but, first it's RansoM Road. It does go under the railway and becomes Ransom Walk which, as the name suggests, is "pedestrians only", and comes out on the Woolwich Road - the A206 - that side has also been redeveloped.
Also this link to a discussion might help with people who have longer/better memories than I have!

  • Thanks for spotting the Typo. It is Ransom.
  • Hello Prestonian

I can't help directly myself I'm afraid but an email to the Woolwich Family History Society might help point you in the right direction.

General enquiries to the Secretary, Sue Highley.

  • Hello Prestonian, just out of interest, what was the score when you saw Preston win at The Valley? Was it the 0.3 in the late 70`s or the more recent 1.2 win? Can`t recall playing you in between those two.

This photo is from 1947 and, whilst the quality is certainly not brilliant, if you look at the area just below where the ground is tagged you will get an idea of the area.

People with better eyesight than mine may be able to be even more precise for you.

When my lad left Uni he moved to London for a few years and lived in Ealing Broadway so we had a good place to stay for London games.

I also attended the 0-0 game in 2009 although I do remember missing a certain game as a 13 year old at Deepdale in Dec 78 as had Chicken Pox.
