  • Should be a good night.

I hope someone will be taking notes so they tell the rest of us what was said.

Unnecessary. I would tell Joe that I hope to see him in the first team again soon, since he deserves to be. I would congratulate him on the fact that he never once hid during the Millwall game, despite his obvious nerves. I'd also commiserate with him for being subbed just when he had started to relax and play his normal game.

  • if you see my smile winking thing on the end Andy you will see it was made in refrence to my defence of joe for 3 days after millsmall saying exactly what you just did
  • Should be a good night.

I hope someone will be taking notes so they tell the rest of us what was said.

Ditto, we're still having to endure sun and wine in France, but hopefully John will ask someone to do it.
  • Obviously can't expect the quality of Covered End's Bromley notes but something more than "it was a good night and they are nice lads" : - )

  • An excellent evening tonight. Both came across brilliantly well, answering some tough questions with a lot of humour added. Thanks go to both players for coming down to Ashford, and thanks to the club for allowing us to have 2 of our great academy products visit us.

Some more in depth information will be posted later, but the most important question has been answered....

Chris Solly expects to be back in 3-4 weeks.
  • So Gower was right, when he said 2 weeks ago, that Solly was out for 5-6 weeks.

did you think he was lying then?

  • So, here we go. Hopefully I've remembered most things that were said last night, and I doubt that any of this is in chronological order.

JP stated that he hasn't found the step up that hard, other than the pace of the game at Championship level. Although he has been limited mainly to cameo roles bar his 2 starts against Oxford and Millwall, he says he is enjoying it, has been told by the gaffer to be a nuisance when he comes on and try and nick a goal.

JP also said that having Jordan Cousins and Callum Harriott in the team has helped him as he has familiar faces with him. He said that all of the strikers have their own strengths and weaknesses, and he said that he feels that he is equally comfortable playing as a target man with the ball coming to his head, and as a second striker with the ball coming to his feet.

Yann would be his ideal strike partner, mainly due to the fact it was him that he played with at Welling when he got his hattrick.

Team morale is still high. They didn't drop their heads after the Millwall game, and all of the lads feel that Tuesday could be the turning point for this season. The fact we have taken 5 points off of Leicester, Watford, and Forest shows that we can play against the bigger teams in the division. The crowd was fantastic on Tuesday night, and they both said that it does make a difference. CS said that it reminded him of Cardiff last season. JP and CS both said that the goal against Millwall was a freak one to concede, but it was a flat game and didn't have the feel of a derby. As the goal came so early against Forest it meant the team had longer to respond, and Forest probably sat back as they felt they were going to win it comfortably, allowing us to play the way we did. Even though it was a draw, the dressing room saw it as a victory.

JP spoke very highly of Nathan Jones, saying that he was the main reason they did so well last year. He wanted to get involved as much as he could, and was the fittest person at the whole club. The difference between the U21 training sessions and the first team is mainly that Nathan Jones did everything himself, whereas Chris Powell takes a step back, and Alex Dyer, Damian Matthew, Ben Roberts etc do all of the work in the first team, and Chris is an observer with the odd word here and there to the coaches and players.

CS and JP both said they feel that we are missing a number 10 player, and both mentioned Tom Ince as the type of player that could make the difference at this level. CS also said that he feels that they are missing someone that would really shake the team up and really shout at players, someone with Premiership experience that could impose themselves on the team. However he also said that although we lack Premiership experience, we have players that want to get there at any cost (with Charlton obviously) and are always wanting to give that 110% in every game.

CS said that he is frustrated watching the team week in week out knowing that he can't help out when things are going bad. He was told by knee specialists to not do anything exercise wise to keep his knee in good health for the first 2-3 weeks. He has recently started going cycling and swimming to keep up his fitness levels and he will return to the training ground in the next week or two to do some further fitness there (there is a treadmill at Sparrows Lane that allows you to alter how much weight is going through your legs, so he can use this to stay fit but not damage his knee any further). He had the niggle since pre season and was trying to play throug the pain, but enough was enough and he didn't want to risk it any more.

CS was very complimentitive of Andy Hughes. He is the biggest character in the dressing room, always in there even if he isn't playing trying to gee everyone up. He tells everyone they are the best player in that position in the world. CS said that he will happily go to him and say 'you are the best right back in the world' and then go and say it to another right back in the room too. But his character is brilliant on the pitch, a calming influence when he comes on.

CS has been spending a lot of time with Hughesey lately due to his knee, and Hughesey has taken CS round Greenwich like a tourist. There was also an incident at an away game last season where they went for a team meeting at the hotel where Brett (the team anaylst) shows the team a presentation on the opposition etc. He set up the monitor, and instead of the video coming on about the team, a video appeared of Andy Hughes walking into the gym at Sparrows Lane completely naked and start doing squats. That is the type of person he is at the club!

CS and JP both talked about Andy Reid as he was the main talking point prior to Tuesday's game. When he was with us, he was in the top 3 of the club in terms of fitness. Make of that what you will!

CS told us that Waggy is settling in well at Bristol City and has moved there now. Even though he said it was sad to see him go, he thought it was the best thing for his career.

CS also mentioned about the referees, and said that he thinks they have been mainly diabolical. The Premiership ones that drop down have an arrogance about them and think they are 'it'. But the less known ones are the better refs, who take the time to talk to you. He was asked if he thinks ex players should become refs like they do in cricket due to their knowledge of the game, but CS didn't think many players would want to due to the fact that they know how hard a job it is and how much stick they get.

That is all I can think of right now. If anything else springs to mind I will add it on.

  • So Gower was right, when he said 2 weeks ago, that Solly was out for 5-6 weeks.

did you think he was lying then?

    No.
  • Love that Andy Hughes story!
  • Cheers Ross, very interesting stuff
  • As much as I'd love to see JP make it as a pro footballer I can't believe he said that he is comfortable with the ball coming to his head - I've not seen him win a header in the 3 games I've seen him play this season (Watford, Millwall & Forest) and I feel he is out of his depth at the moment.
  • Thanks for the warm welcome John.
Signed up a couple of people for the trust, and good luck with the rest of the events you hold.
  • Thanks for writing up the comments Ross.
  • thanks a lot Ross

Is this the was way you'd never seen Hamer make a save? : - )
