Kasey Palmer's move to Chelsea has been talked about, but we also lost a goalkeepeer, Ryan Huddart to Arsenal last year. McGinty's to Man Utd didn't work out, and then there was Owen Price a few years back going to Spurs.
Defoe went to a smaller club in West Ham, one where he had a chance of breaking into the first team. Shelvey and Jenkinson moved when they were slightly older, but even then Shelvey has since left Liverpool.
With the 70/80 man squads what chance do they have of ever breaking through? Palmer is now one of many promising midfielders. He'd have been a stand out player here and probably pushing for a place on the bench in the first team within a couple of years.
Interesting we signed two players from AFC Wimbledon. Shows it works both ways.
“At Charlton we provide players with a pathway to the first team. You move and you could get lost. People don’t always act in the best interests of development. If someone came here to take one of our players I don’t think they would give a monkeys about what is best for that player in the long-term.”
No idea. Didn't consider any of the new first years, but your right there's no mention of where he came from.
The club do mention the few that came from Arsenal. Maybe that suggests we signed Hanlan from another club, rather than him being let go from a bigger side.
When it comes to Semi Ajayi...if every other player is being given at least a year, and you're only being offered 6 months, the management are telling you what they think of you. So you make a hard decision and move on. Unless you are in the system you don't know the ins and outs. There are players who are given scholarships and will only play 4-5 games over 2 years. Why would that be done? Why sign a player if you aren't going to play him. How is that in the best interests of developing him? Football is a cut throat game, and some parents/players are now cutting the throats of the clubs...the clubs don't like when the shoe's on the other foot.
No one knows what the future holds, but if you could only guarantee work for two more years, would you want to work in a place you love for £100 a week or a new 'more challenging' place for £1000 a week?
I don't think it is an easy decision for any parent/child to leave a club that has nurtured them, but as with any company there's a lot more that happens behind closed doors that never leaves 'the office'. Football is quite 'incestuous' so speaking out is not the think to do if you are thinking of furthering your career.
BTW Also lost another player a couple years before Ryan Huddart ....his dad wanted a higher standard of coaching (and maybe more) Went to Chelsea...still there first year scholar.

I'll see if I can find out who they are.
