Marvin - What's Going On?

With Sordell.

Was first choice in opening two games but, like many others, didn't impress for whatever reason. New environment, not fit, poor team performance, who knows.

But where now? Very early days but Church and Kermo forming a good partnership and when Garry Nelson I mean Simon Church was subbed late on it was Pigott who got the nod.

Too early to write him off but as a loan player who isn't playing and with Bolton bottom will they want him back or would Powell be happy to see him go?

On the plus side he scored midweek and did well according to reports.

On the negative Prague mention that Sordell is an relatively expensive addition to the squad.

  • Got a mate who's a Bolton fan and they really don't rate him. I've not seen enough of him to form an opinion but I like what I see of Church. And Piggott.
  • Surely he's just playing second fiddle to church who scored first and has stayed in the team. I was surprised to see piggott too who I thought did very well.

He'll come good just like Sheffield United.
  • Piggott and Sordell are different types of player though. It would depend on the situation we are in when the sub is made as to which one comes on.
  • Needs a goal or two

Sordell was a more obvious choice to replace Church though, I'd have thought Pigott was more someone to bring on to replace Yann, as the target man?

Agree. It worked very well having JP on but it made me wonder.

But early days. No need to over analyse it imo but thought it was interesting

That's my thinking. Yesterday we were trying to see the game out and CP must have thought Piggott was more suited to that. If the scores were level I expect Sordell would have come on but that said CP obviously rates Piggott so maybe Sordell is fourth choice. Can't see Sordell being happy not being in the starting line up but I suppose you wouldn't expect him too.

Possibly. I personally think Sordell is more direct. We needed someone to hold on to the ball. To waste time and play well with their back to goal. In the cup game pigott was brilliant at keeping hold of it, in various situations. From what I've seen from Sordell (not just with us) he is more of an off the shoulder type. That's just my opinion. Maybe Powell thought that Pigott would put in more work rate than Sordell would.

Keep the faith with Sordell. I've read that he takes a little while to settle in unfortunately
  • In honesty I have no idea where it leaves him as a loan player, however I do know that it was the right decision by SCP to give Pigott the nod yesterday. We needed to close the game out and his hold up play is good.

I have not been able to see a game that he has played in so can't comment on his performances however from his previous I know that he is not a bad player to have sitting on the bench!

He's a good player and I'm sure he will get his chance this season because if he is expensive as suggested then I cannot see him being here just to warm the bench!

It is a healthy situation though with Kermy and Church scoring goals and from the game yesterday they partner each other well and I will always feel that a permanent player will put more effort in. I felt sorry for the guy yesterday the amount of running he was doing (I was getting exhausted just watching!) I am happy that Church is on a two year deal.

    So overall, a happy problem.

  • Pigott was brought on primarily to hold the ball up and waste time in the corners, Sordell I'm sure is still ahead of him in starting terms.

I don't read anything into yesterday other than Pigott coming on to do a specific job holding the ball in the corners and holding it up generally for the last few minutes which he did very well.

If we had been chasing the game I'd wager Sordell would have come on if I was a gambling man.

EDIT: As I've posted before my Watford supporting mate who watches us sometimes really rates Sordell so give him time.
  • Pigott done well yesterday.

Also side note that maybe there would be more money for an appearance fee if Sordell is used?
  • Sordell has to earn his place in the team. In his defence, he has only been at the club a short time. At least that means that CP is not contracted to play him that may have been the case with some premiership loanees in the past. Pigotts hold up play, not giving possession away and work ethic puts him ahead of Sordell at the moment.

    This.

  • Nice to have a glut of half decent strikers. Keep him.
  • Sordell will get his chance when he does he has to make sure he's indroppable maybe a winner vs Millwall will do that
  • Very early days still. All it will take is an injury to Yann or Church or loss of form and he will be back in. Pigott was the right choice for the situation imho, with his ability to hold the ball up.
  • Sordell is a good player and I'm sure he'll show that.
  • A guy who sits near me says he is a mate of Dougie Freedman...yes i know we all have friends close to the board...and says if we can cough up 3 mill we can have him...yer likely.

  • Good that we're having a debate about the 3rd and 4th choice striker....

In the tradition of players scoring against exes, Sordell to score the winner against Watford in 3 weeks time?
  • Nothings going on. Yann and Church are playing well and scoring goals and Pigott is our player and works well with Yann. Simple.
  • Way too early to judge or have we made our mind up after a couple of games re D Green

Clever attempt to bring in your pet player. Green had ten games at the start of last season. I think Powell made his mind up then : - )

No one is making their mind up about Sordell, just discussing a player, it's allowed

I would say Sordell would work better with Yann than Pigott. Reason Pigott came on and not Sordell on Saturday was that the game needed a bigger guy who could hold it up. Nothing to see here.
  • And hold it up well he did. Thought it was an excellent cameo.
  • As its already been stated... Pigott as he showed the first time he got the ball, he's perfect for helping to defend the lead (looked very experienced yesterday)

Sordell is perfect to bring on if we're chasing a goal for an equaliser or winner (i.e. the Obika mold) a bit of pace, bit of experience and has a sneaky goal in him

You keep saying that Green has had lots of chances, he only stated seven games last season. I just want to see a bit more of Green, especially at home.
As for Sordell he hasn't really played yet, what is there to discuss?
  • Sordell needed a kick in the arse to say you aint a cert here pal up your game of Piggott is in and good enough I have had enough of the loanees coming in and being infront of the youth especially the good youth and Joe is good enough
