All this stuff about contracts....

I am trying to put myself in the boots of a Charlton player whose contract runs out at the end of the season. Let's assume I've got a young family to feed, I read on Charlton Life that the team I play in are League One plus a bit or mid-table at best.

Now, maybe I don't think like a professional footballer, but I would be out there trying to show the other 23 Championship clubs that I would be a good catch if Charlton don't renew my contract.

I certainly wouldn't go round in a dispirited manner so that after a bad season I am looking at half the salary at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Or, am I missing something?

Not at all. It's just that some people because that's what footballers are might adopt the attitude you describe and other might feel dispirited about it.

In the past couple of (successful) years Chris Powell has constructed a team that is more than the sum of its parts. Some of our best players were castoffs from other clubs. He's inspired good individuals to become great team players. Not on his own of course. And that's not to slight our players. The point is, they've done their part too. The result is a characterful group who love being at Charlton. In their heyday they were brimming with confidence, but we've since seen that erode.

In the scenario you're suggesting we'd have 11 players playing for their future with other clubs. They wouldn't be playing for their team, but looking to stand out and shine; as individuals. The unit Chris Powell and his team have worked so hard to build would be broken back down into its individual parts. How do you think we'd get on in that scenario?
