Chris Powell: Charlton Athletic overachieved last season

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23548217

"We will have to step up again and it won't be easy.

But we are Charlton. We will come out fighting, play our stuff and show people we are no pushovers."

You've got to love Chris Powell. I'm really excited about the season ahead.

  • Ouch..
  • classic powelly media talk. it's like when mourinho first went to chelsea....told the media that it was a two year plan an they'd be challenging for the league in the second year......told the team the date and game which they'd win the league(1st season).....i'm sure powell has told the team there is no reason we cannot at least be within a shout of the playoffs come the last five games of the season. We've got a stronger squad than when we finished last season and we were bloody close to sneaking it then

He's right , they punched to the max to reach 9th

I think the spread of points will be wider ths season, best I realistically expect is mid upper, can't see us being within 3 points of the play offs

    Top 6 2% .... 7th-12th 20%..... 13th-21st 70% .... The dreaded R 8%
  • Ah I missed these unique Bayesian predictions from ooh ahh

begger 8% though the word that cannot be said. ..

    3%

    Max.... Please
  • He doesn't want teams to try harder against us this season. He also doesn't want players getting complacent. He knows what he's doing.

    not bad, but top 6 10%, R zero. 7-12 70%, 13-22 20%
  • SCP getting the excuses in early ! :-)
  • Were gonna win the league

I like you're thinking. Sums up how I see it to be honest. If we can keep what we've got and Sordell/Church work out? I even think we may be a dark horse this season..
  • Nothing to see here, Powell simply stating what anyone can see. Promoted team, very inexperienced at Championship level, small budget etc etc 9th was an overachievement!

  • "Our budget is similar to Rochdale's"
  • top 6 50% ... simples :)
  • PROMOTION THIS SEASON..
  • People are forgetting the honeymoon period that we gain from the previous seasons promotion .....
I'd bet that more teams have a better first year up than 2nd year up

I feel a stat hunt coming on...
  • Obviouslly if the team were promoted or relegated in that first season you can't compare the following season due to different league
  • So here's a table of how all the teams promoted from League One have faired in their first and second season back in the Championship. I'd say it shows that on average OoohAhh is right and generally teams tend to finish higher in their first season rather than their second season. That's not to say that we won't buck that trend, as you can see below quite a few have.

    Team. 1st seas. 2nd seas
    Saints. 2nd NA
    Bright 10th. 4th
    Peterb. 18th. 22nd
    Norwich. 2nd. NA
    Leeds. 7th. 14th
    Scum. 9th. 16th
    Leicester. 5th. 10th
    Peterb. 24th. NA
    Scunny. 20th. 24th
    Swansea. 8th. 3rd
    Forest. 19th. 7th
    Doncaster 14th. 12th
  • I'm glad Chris agrees with me :-)

But in all seriousness , c'mon lads lets stop fannying around and get out of this division ( upwards I mean).
  • Gonna be a tough season again. Not because I think we aren't good enough at all but because last season it was a very even league and I think this season will be the same. Powell will need to keep the spirits up. If he does that we will be in with a chance. Look how we changed last season once confidence kicked in.

    Come on you addicks
  • Last season proved that overall we're a very decent away side.
Sound defensively with the ability to snatch a goal.

We just need to show more creativity breaking down opponents at home.
And not panic when we need to hold on to a lead in the closing minutes.

    That includes our crowd also!

So no real pattern. Although you could say the smaller, less experienced in the Championship clubs do a bit worse .
  • Of 12, 3 didn't have a second season and of the remaining 9, 5 finished lower, 4 finished higher.

Thus there is, absolutely, no useful data there at all and OoohAhh is merely speculating based on a hunch.
  • Go back further and more teams .... Its a correct view and I'll have a bet with anyone that we do worse this year than last :-) its in the numbers
  • With us finishing 9th I wouldn't take that bet, but I would take a bet that at least one of us, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield finish higher this season than last.

Maybe, Oohaah. Or maybe you're just a miserable sod!

    ;o)

  • “I’m missing a number of key players. The boys that are out there are willing themselves and pushing themselves to try and get us wins and try and get us points.

“We’ve played two of the top six, with arguably our weakest squad because of injuries and they’ve managed to get two real positive draws.

And when quizzed about the chance of bringing some fresh faces in on loan during the brief hiatus, the boss remained coy.

“I suppose that’s the only bonus from the international break, that the boys can recover and the injured boys hopefully can make themselves available for the up and coming games,” he said, before reacting to the loan enquiry.

“Everyone knows that things are very tight for us budget-wise and I’ve had to lean on one or two of those younger players,” he continued.

“I thought Jordan Cousins was very assured in only his third start for us and we also had young Callum Harriott and Joe Pigott coming off the bench.

“You want these boys to develop and learn slowly but surely but we are having to throw them in. I suppose they are going to have to learn at the sharp end.

“It would be nice for me to add some Championship experience and players with that know how to come in and boost us. At the moment it’s not possible so we will have to get on with what I have and motivate them and cajole them into trying to put in a performance to win us games.”

Powell's quotes after yesterday. I love Powell and I know he is frustrated like we all are but I'm getting a bit fed up of him saying things like this. It can't do the players confidence any good constantly saying they aren't good enough and he'd rather have money so he could replace them all.

As I said I love Powell, just my constructive criticism.
  • I think he's just saying that at their tender age he'd rather use them a bit more sparingly.

That's not what he said at all though is it ? He said he's missing some of his key players, which is a fact, and he'd love to be able to bring in some experience which I'm sure we all, including the players, would also love. At the start he praises the team for the last two games and highlights two of the younger lads for specific praise.

Think you're twisting his words a little.
  • He's trying to explain to the thick amongst our support that it's not an ideal situation for our youngsters to be playing in and can you go easy on them you divvy twunts
  • If he'd said "we've got a reasonable mid table squad and should be doing better than we are" he'd be in danger of talking himself out of a job. Any manager with any sense, is going to underplay the strength of his squad. He's got a good excuse ATM with Solly, Kerms, and Jacko all out. With those three back we definitely do have a good mid table squad IMO.
