Will football league clubs ever balance their books?

The only way forward seems to be cutting squad size and reducing wages. Don't think most clubs can realistically raise ticket prices and TV money adds little to the pot.

  • I would like to think that FFP will mean that Leagues 1 & 2 where clubs are generally of a similar size and without both the golden egg of the PL one promotion away and the unbalancing affects of the parachure money (except Wolves haha) will find a way which is a good start. The Championship is a more difficult nut to crack as it will end up with 50% of the teams on parachute money and the other 50% chasing a dream. If you are in the second 50% it will be difficult to compete for players and stay competitive whilst not over spending.
  • They never have done and they never will. The interesting thing is though is that they all manage to carry on. No other business anywhere can boast that sort of survival rate.

This link is for Division 2 in 1913.
Of the twenty teams only Glossop and Bradford PA are no longer in the league, although both are in still in the industry at a regional/local level. All the teams mentioned still compete in the same locality except Woolwich Arsenal, who moved to North London. In this case a better, stronger and more worthwhile club took there place! ;o)

Nottingham Forest, despite finishing bottom, later became champions and retaining champions of Europe, making them one of the best teams in the world.

My point is that all the teams in Division 2 in 1913 survived world war one, The Great Depression, World war two, post war austerity, Thatcherism, the On digital fiasco and the recent banking collapse. Football clubs and the Football league will go on forever somehow. No other industry could dream this level of survival.
