  • I remember him knocking out a referee - against Norwich IIRC when there was a disputed goal. The ball didn't cross the line but was given (Robert Fleck I think), the players surrounded the ref who turned away and ducked just as Reid arrived and he collided with his outstretched arm.
  • Reidy and Johnny H were the best full back pairing I've ever seen at Charlton. Wiggo and Solly are pretty good, but they were different class.
    Quote

Totally agree with the above quote, great penalty taker, great partnership with John H. Never let the side down!
  • great times and one of my boyhood hero's who took shitty old homeless Charlton to the promised land

i think SCP and Luke Young were a better full back pairing than Mark Reid and Johnny H
  • shame no picture.
i really rated mark reid, very good defender as well as a great penalty taker. i never saw him miss one, though no doubt, someone will tell me he did?

As I mention earlier, we got 3 pens in a home game at The Valley, against Palarse, I think it may have been the message to our supports game.
He scored two and missed the third, I think if he had scored it would have been the first penalty hat trick for the club.
    It was that game.

I seem to recall he actually took four penalties in that game as one of them had to be retaken. Pearson got the other goal I think.

My first away game out of London that was.

Didn't we (Melrose?) also score a "winner", only for the ref to rule it out for a free kick to us?

I was at that game, I think it was boxing day and I think we won 2-1. Blackforest's
description was a bit kind to Reid. We were concerned that he was going to get sent off for pushing the ref and face a long ban similar to the Di-canio incident at Sheffield Wednesday but somehow it was deemed to be accidental.
  • Nah, was definitely 1-1

    Sorry off_it you're right it was 1-1.
  • Always enjoyed watching Reidy play and think he is the best left-back I have seen at Charlton.Wiggins is excellent and could possibly surpass his quality but Reid is the best I've seen in nearly fifty years.I saw Brian Kinsey play, and Phil Warman, great players too but different styles of play.An amazing find by Lennie Lawrence. And my "namesake" was the best right-back,just ahead of Bob Curtis and Chris Solly. All the above were and are professional to their back teeth and top,top players.

You're right offy - I remember the retaken pen - and being convinced he was going to miss it. Think, if I remember right, Pearson's goal was a header from inside the six yard box that looked like it actually came off his shoulder?

  • John Pearson scoring with a header? Surely not!

Yeah, it was - in front of the Covered End I seem to recall.

Pearson wasn't all that bad - used to win knock-downs for Willo to slot home. A bit like Niall Quinn and that little old bloke who's now at Palarse....

I didn't think he was bad at all. I liked him. Was a very important player for us that season. A great signing by Lennie.

    Top scorer I think...
  • I liked Willo, too: lightning acceleration. In those days keepers could pick up back-passes, so there was often a lot of faffing around in defence. Williams would hang off, 10 or 12 yards away, looking disinterested, and then suddenly pounce. He'd arrive out of nowhere, rob the last defender and be in on goal. Scored 8 or 10 just like that for a couple of seasons.

Pearson and Williams never played together, Pearson left for Leeds in 1987 and Williams didn't make his debut until 1988 - do you mean Melrose?

    Thanks, Ormiston - Memory's going...!

  • what a coincidence just been going through some of my Uncle Colins paperwork that I picked up from his flat this weekend and came across this.image

Did you not see Chris Powell play. I believe he was capped for England.
  • Scp and look young for me also. Saw the tail end of Reid and Johnny H and think the prem boys edge it on mobility and athleticism. Both pairs equally great technically and in terms I attitude/determination

  • Class player, Reidy and, as others have said, he and John Humphrey were a superb partnership, both in attack and defence.

I remember an absolutely crunching tackle that Reid delivered at Chelsea in the "Battle of the Bridge" in May 1988. It despatched the recipient ( Speedie, Durie or some other oik ) into the home dugout. Most satisfying, that one, especially given the poisonous atmosphere on and off the pitch. I must dust off the video and watch it again.
  • I did see SCP play,of course---just doesn't now seem as though he was a player!
He was a great full-back too, good distribution and rarely losing out to his opponent. So consistent and another true professional. And a glut of great goals to his name too!
  • One of my favourites as young supporter along with Colin Walsh and Shirtliff.

Solid, unflashy left-back and great penalty-taker (except when it mattered against Palace!).

Used the drive the old bloke behind me in the Junior Reds seats barmy with his little dinks down the line but a quality player and part of a great side. What a defence.

    Bolder
    Humphrey, Shirtliff, Thompson/Miller, Reid
