I emailed someone at the club about the celtic rumour. He said it wouldn't happen due to celtic's appearance fee and police costs as they charge full whack for friendlies. Sounds like we really have next to no money, especially if brentford can afford celtic's appearance fee and police costs.

brilliant, so because we aren't playing Celtic it means we are skint and doomed.....ever thought that we maybe just didn't want to play them?

is there not a open training session for season ticket holders that week? maybe that is instead of a home friendly

No, that's on Sunday 21. VIP and Valley Gold members can train on the pitch with players. ST holders watch from stands. Harsh but fair : - )
Expect a few broken limbs when I start bumping into them then ;)
  • Thats good as i completly made the Celtic thing up
  • I've always thought we should play Welling United at The Valley rather than Park View Road, maybe split the ticket income money in Welling's favour so that Welling get more than they would at their own stadium, also more fans would be able to attend although it doesn't affect me! *just an idea*
  • If Celtic demand such a big appearance fee, how on earth are Brentford affording it?

Admittedly the police costs will be a lot less though as their ground is a third of our size.

But Pitch Invasion & Booze :(

Their new owner has money, and running the club costs less than Charlton, so he has the cash available. Our owners having to put in £7 million plus a season to keep the club afloat.

But we did approach both Celtic and the tax dodgers a couple of years ago and the game/s would have gone ahead but for the police costs.

Same with Spurs friendly two years ago. Police deemed it high risk so demanded very high policing costs.
  • Well one area the football league is failing to exploit, is the overseas tv wrights to cover the championship. If like the premeirship they sold these wrights seperatly from the domestic then they would raise a few tens of millions more. The selling point would be the fight for premiership promotion. Even the average punter in Africa would be interested in following that as well as the premiership games

This is exactly what I meant before some started having a go. Sorry if I upset anyone. If we can't afford celtic and police fees but brentford can, well we cant expect any other decent opposition. Surely the police fees for brentford would be about the same as ours as they're in west london and the amount of celtic fans that will turn up.
A couple of years ago I was a clean team volunteer and we got to ask Parky questions. I asked him why there wasn't a home friendly, he said it was supposed to be Tottenham, but the Police and other things made sure that didn't happen.
I suppose we have to take the ground size into account, but it just seems like that the police keep stopping us from having a good friendly.
As for me saying it looks like we have no money, if we cant pay for a friendly, It just makes me automatically think how can we afford players in the summer without selling?
Sorry again if I upset anyone, I didn't mean to.

  • It is a fair point to make. A few assumptions, but nobody really knows what is happening. I dont think we can afford anyone in the summer. IF that is the case (and we dont know yet) then never mind play offs, I would be more than happy to survive again. 21st would be a success - as it would be every year until something changes.
  • We should play St.Mirren at home. Make it a two legged affair (the first leg being in Spain) with the aggregate winner getting a free drink in Bartram’s.
  • I think that Celtic (or Rangers for that matter) would cause more trouble than it would be worth.Clearly if the Hoops are going to Brentford then I suspect we could have nabbed them.

Hopefully we can get some foreign opposition again without any baggage.Big premier teams do not have these sorts of games anymore but prefer to play each other in places like America or Thailand.

We had Ipswich at home in July 2010, still managed to pull in nearly 6,000 people paying a tenner a pop. No great shakes, but not bad for mediocre opposition, and that was when we were a league 1 team.

Im not too bothered about the opposition, I just dont want to have to wait till August to see a game at the Valley again....

Maybe see if any Spanish teams are planning a tour in the UK and grab them for a friendly, Im thinking the likes of Rayo Vallecano or RCD Mallorca...
  • Lots of assumptions being made here.

Read the quote from the club again: "Apart from the fact they would want a substantial sum to appear the Police bill would be very high which would make it uneconomical."

Nowhere does it say that we *can't* afford it. Just that it's considered 'uneconomical'. That, for me, suggests that the club feels it has better things to spend its money on. Personally I would tend to agree.
  • Just remembered that a little bird told me at the end of April that Villa had been approached but wanted 50% of the gate takings...

Also Real Betis were lined up but again made demands we were not prepared to meet.

They need the money more than we do to be fair! They aren't allowed to pay any of their players more than E.850k per year. and are pretty much exclusively reliant on their academy and freebie loans, how they are challenging for a Europa League spot in La Liga this year is beyond me.
  • Mark my words - It will be a Spanish side.
  • Rayo, Madrids 4th team....
  • Racing Santander, to tie in with the new shirt sponsors

What this comment has to do with this thread I don't know but you will be interested to hear that the Football League does sell its rights overseas but there is very little interest from the public in Asia or no doubt elsewhere so the income is probably pretty negligible.
  • any of the Jock teams would be ok. Loads of exiles in London. Dosnt have to their big two. Hearts--Hibs--Abe`dean---Dundee would all be a ok for a friendly.
  • Why not a decent Dutch or French team? Or do they expect their travel/hotel costs to be paid as well as some share of the match receipts? How does this work?
  • Apart from satisfying a fans football "fix" I think the majority of pre season friendliest are a waste of time for fans. Nobody is really bothered and its a leg stretch for the players. I can see why players need games but when was the last PSF that actually inspired anything.

The 4-3 defeat at the den a couple of years back was a genuinly good, competitive game!

Agreed. Lets play Millwall again. At least there is local pride at stake.

Would be decent to get one of these away even.
