Curbs vs CP

Curbs was a great manager for us but there seems to be far more affection towards CP. I think CP is a better man manager(his biggest strength) and if he can marry this to the tactical nous that Curbs had then his place as a club legend will be assured.
CP has brought joy back to the Valley and I think fans of many clubs are jealous of us having him in charge. The desperate days of Dowie and Pardew seem a lifetime ago.

  • Curbs was a brilliant manager for us but it felt to me like he was always a West Ham man, that's who he loved and that's where he had his sights. With Chris Powell, he undoubtedly has a lot of affection for Leicester but you just know he absolutely loves Charlton, and treasured his relationship with the fans as a player as well as now as the manager. Both tremendous managers. Was Curbs better than CP when he was at the same level of experience? I don't really think so, although he did subsequently gain a huge amount of experience and tactical nous later on. But so will CP, hopefully with us for many, many years. If I was a player, who would I want to follow, who would get my blood pumping, who would I smash through walls for - Chrissie Powell for sure.
  • needs to get to the prem with us
  • Powell has been great for two of his 2 1/2 seasons, Curbs did it over decades.

I love SCP but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
  • Would be quality if he was with us for 8, 9, 10 years.
The way football is now though, I dont see it

He will have moved on to bigger and better things Imo. I will be cheering on whoever he manages.
  • Very different personalities, but if/when Chris can follow A.C. up a league it will be a great accomplishment, then it's a case of try and climb a little higher again or a bigger club I fear, personally I would like to have a crack at top ten with C.P. in charge.
  • For me CP has firmly secured his place as a Charlton legend
  • be great if he could do it as a manager too
  • Chalk and cheese. Curbs had some very strong characteristics, the best of which gave this Club probably the best period of years ever. I did feel that his innate stubborness made it harder to bond with individual players. Chris is I think a naturally warmer character, with the potential to go all the way. If he were to take us back to the Premiership, I believe that he would become a very strong candidate to manage England, although I like him too much to wish it on him. Time will tell.
  • Curbs is a legend. CP is a legend as a player and a legend in the making as a manager.
Very different characters and CP is the tonic we all needed following the debacle after Curbs left

  • Chris Powell joined as a manager already as an absolute legend out of the top drawer for us.

The fact that he took us from pretty much our lowest point in decades to a record breaking championship win means that he will be talked about for years and years to come, whatever happens.

Alan Curbishley should have a stand to his name.
  • Curbs was great for the Club but he didn't seem to be as friendly to his players at Chris appears to be. I always hated the way Curbs totally ignored subbed players. Chris always seems to acknowledge them when they come off.
  • Life after Chris Powell at Charlton......can't imagine it now. I hope he will never have to manage a club that plays against us, although bit pointless thinking that far ahead.
  • Like comparing a gorgeous blonde to a delicious brunette (female lol) ... both brilliant, both very different
  • Curbs is someone you admire, and is a legend for his managerial spell, whereas he was a decent player but no more. I guess his clinical personality makes it more difficult to (man) love him.

Powell is more likeable, and has near legend status for his time on the pitch and has near legend status for his managerial spell - 2.5 years isn't long enough to reach full legend status yet!

Don't forget Lennie, a legend and also a likeable individual

This. Curbs is arguably our greatest manager. Powell is a potential greatest manager, if he stays long enough!

I'm not going to diss what Curbs did for us , he got us punching above our weight for many a season.

Where it went wrong was not having a contingency plan in place for when he left.

I think CP has so to speak ' put the batteries back into supporting Charlton'

Having previously been in many management roles at work over the years you have to be fairly driven as a person and you really need the support of the people who are around you to buy into what you are trying to achieve which is not an easy task.

I so wanted Chris to succeed when he came back to Charlton as a manager, as he brings fun , dignity, determination and pride with him characteristics he showed in buckets as a player, which is why I decided to up my game and get along to as many away games as were physically possible ( 18 in League One).

The warmth this guy brings with is infectious, my question is if Chris was to up sticks one day, who would fill his boots?

I know it's disrespectful to speculate whilst someone is still in the job, but I can see the same thing happening again, ie we tumble back down the divisions again.

Would be nice to think Chris could build something special, and if he decides to leave that we have some sort off continuity and legacy.

    Very well put.
  • This conversation isn't on. Like discussing who your favourite kid is. Curbs is an absolute legend I love him to bits and I love Powell to bits. Curbs was very likable too in a different way. He wasn't brash and I loved his "clinical" nature and his stubborn traits in a different way from loving CP as just a quality nice guy.

Different people, neither perfect but both incredible and I love them equally.

Chris Powell feels more like one of us. Curbs was more like our dad, telling us off when he was disapointed in us! But seriously, Curbs is in the past and his achievements are on record - Play Off Victory - Championship Champions - Surperb developments to the Valley off the back of a sustained period in the Premiership - being genuinely the 4th best team in the country for a short period and finishing 7th that season after losing our talisman in the January window.

Chrissy is in the future, and I'm sure he will give Curbs a run for his money if we can keep him, but you can't compare the two yet! Chrissy has a League one title and a decent championship season to his name so far.

  • One of the things I liked about Curbs was the fact about him visiting new recruits and showing them a video of Charlton and how we got to where we were then. I can see some of Curbs qualities in Powell and if he stays long enough, who knows what he could achieve. And there haven't been that many managers that have got us promoted from leagues 3 to 1.

Powell is in some ways son of Curbs, someone grounded in what the club is about, but that by itself isn't always enough, or else Mark Kinsella would still be with us. Pardew is a former Charlton player, from those seminal days of the early 90s, and look where that got us!
  • Thing I hope/like to imagine is , that there is a possibility that someone from the current squad could go on to manage us - imagine having jacko or yann at the helm !
  • The time for this conversation is in 10 years time.

Only then can a fair comparison be made.
  • Curbs instilled great loyalty to the club and team spirit into (most of) the players. And one of those players is now our manager, and carrying on the good work, just when we thought it might all have been wasted!
  • If it wasn't for Curbs, there's a good chance that Chris Powell would have no association with CAFC at all !

    Very true
  • Curbs all day long.

I love CP and he is a legend but Curbs was more in the deep end and he help built us up.
  • As Len says it is far too soon to compare. If CP does manage to get us promoted to the PL and challenging for the Champs League, I am happy to call it a draw, but Curbs can say that CPs dynasty would probably never have happened but for the Curbs dynasty which enabled him to be signed for us in the first place.

To be fair, Jimmy Seed and Lennie are currently ahead of CP for their achievements. I note all three had Wembley on their cv albeit in Lennie's case it was in a Mickey mouse cup and didn't involve winning there! Jimmy is the only Charlton manager to have taken us from D3 to D1 and our highest ever league place to boot. But for Lennie, doing it all with no home ground to play at was incredible.

Wimbledon were the only other club to play four whole seasons in the top flight on someone else's ground. In at least one season their average attendance was higher than Palace achieved this year. Hard to believe there was a time when that was possible isn't it?

WARNING: Seed went on to manage Millwall, Lawrence went on to manage Palace and Curbs went on to manage West Ham. So what on earth will become of our Chris later in his career?

He will come out of the closet and manage his own gay bar.
