The most revered man in English football?

http://www.cardiffcityforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=110522&sid=13840ad9b4f0c2be7ce0a84a1acfb0d1

Somebody just sent me this thread. Gave me a massive buzz just reading through the comments on it - just emphasises what an absolute legend SCP is and not just at Charlton, but throughout the country (and even Wales). I can't get bored of bigging this bloke up. He must be one of the most widely revered men in English football. Everybody you meet, whoever they support, refers to him as a legend. Looking into the long-term, being so respected can only benefit us in terms of player recruitment (and retention!) etc.

It’s also noticeable (as with Brighton) how we have been praised for not just parking the bus for tough away fixtures. He is clearly an increasingly adept manager and it is a massive bonus that he is just an absolute top bloke as well rather than some bullshitting, smooth talking prat like Pardew, Dowie or Holloway.

We are seriously f*cking lucky to have him! I hope Jiminez and whoever else appreciate that because it won’t be long before there’s a queue of other clubs after him (what is he, 2nd longest serving manager in the Championship?), and if we don’t do the absolute most to keep him here at least for the medium term then we may as well burn the Valley down ourselves.

  • Agreed. Though sh*t happens and not everyone will see/ feel it the same way unfortunately
  • Fantastic stuff.

You'll find that with most people in English football who are considered "legends", there are always a loud minority who can't stand them for one reason or another (Beckham, Scholes, Keane, Shearer, Owen etc).

Powell is one of the very, very few who, although isn't at that sort of high profile, has probably more consistency with respect from his peers as anyone.
  • I can't really imagine why anybody at all could dislike Chris Powell.
  • Most if not all the players/managers over the age of about 25 would know who SCP is because of his role as Chairman of the PFA. They would all know what type of person his is and what a genuine person he is too.

I don't understand how anyone could not like the man...

Apart from Sheffield Wednesday fans, apparently.
  • I love the guy, he's brilliant, and still learning!!! The guy sitting next to me though...oh he doesn't know what he's doing blah blah blah. Against Bolton he left early and said Powell needs to sort it out, he's shit etc..... no faith, because what happened?

Chris Powell is a class act. So happy we have him at our club!!!!!
  • A real gent and there are not many of them in the game. Hope he takes us back to the Prem and onto real success before retiring into the England job in 25 years time.
  • As soon as he's managing in the prem the whole nation will see what a genuine, honest, talented bloke he is. First black England manager.
  • Sorry I think he is just stealing Malkys lime light it shows Powell is an egotistical maniac
  • Clueless clown, tactically naïve blah blah blah.

Let's not kid ourselves. A few on here were calling for him to go after Millwall and others have always doubted him and his abilities.

Yes, it was only a few but they were there and they will be back as soon as we lose a game.

  • He's the best thing that's ever happened to this club, no question...

...and as a few others here have said, I also think he's destined to manage England in the future.

Lets just carry on and ignore them, the large majority of us know just how lucky we really are.
  • We are so Lucky.
  • I want to get a tattoo of the man
  • Yes, it was only a few but they were there and they will be back as soon as we lose a game.

The "He got lucky" comment came after we won a game - beating Leeds 2-1 recently.

Nice posts, thanks for putting the link up.

I think CP is a great ambassador for our club and worth his weight in gold to us on and off the pitch. Another year and we will be beating the bigger boys off with a stick.
  • I still remember when we played Derby in his first season for us (he signed for us from them for the youngsters on here.) He got a fantastic reception from the Derby fans. Up till then I'd thought he was a decent signing for left back. On that day, I realised he was much more that that - a really special and charismatic person. Love him! (And I got the SCP hug before Malky - see my pic :-)
  • The only other football person I can think of (off the top of my head at least) who is so universally liked would be Bobby Robson.

If I'm not mistaken, Curbs only went for Powell after losing out on his first target (Can't recall the players name, only that he chose Boro instead of us) so he then went for Chrissy. Thank f**k for that......................

  • He is just a class act and we would be nowhere without him as a team or as a club built on strong principles.

I think you're thinking of Dean Gordon. Boro signed him from Palace that year.

  • Hand on heart I can honestly say I have never once said he should go but I will admit to some doubts how wrong was I? thing is CAFC has never been an easy club to manage even during the peak years with Curbs he saw his best player (Parker) sold, so to achieve anything here is really something. I really hope CP stays as he is one of us, a fan as well as the manager and on top of that he is a gentleman, likeable and rational. We are lucky to have him.
  • He didn't score enough from full back.

    Yep, that's the fella.............
  • Expected a thread on the Charlton Vicar.
  • Reverential memories of great players depend on how old one is. For me ? .... Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and George Best .. alas two of them are now playing for the Angels eleven
  • Best in a different manner to the other two I suspect though Lincs?
  • Best in a different manner to the other two I suspect though Lincs?

Moore and Hurst for world cup exploits and for being gentlemen, Best for being a rogue and a genius
  • I remember Moore when he played for Fulham and the ease with which he played Killer out of the game. Hardly broke sweat, I don't think he even tackled him, just perfect positioning, anticipation and of course his uncanny reading of the game. Frustrating for Killer, and for Charlton fans, but I knew I'd witnessed a football genius. And, like our manager, a huge credit to his sport.
