Did anyone expect our recent run of form?

After going 2-0 down to Bolton I really thought we were deep in the shit and the transformation since then has been amazing. A run of 5 tough fixtures and no defeats is an incredible achievement given the level of doom and gloom there was and we can now face next season with renewed optimism.
If finances are available and key players remain then next season should be a good one. CP has the potential to be a really good manager and has brought back the team spirit that was missing for so many seasons!
Onwards and upwards!

  • Yes i predicted it all along.
  • "If finances are available and key players remain"
  • No I didn't....but it's been a funny old season.
  • "If finances are available and key players remain"

    Key points there.
  • We are usually one of the worst finishers in each league we have been in for quite some time,so this is great to see.
  • "If finances are available and key players remain"

Just hope all the good work from this season isn't undone by financial problems.

Exactly, not asking for to much is it....hold onto key players and spend 1-2 million on 2-3 additions?
  • NLA's balls predicted this run of form.
  • Didn't expect it, but am not surprised by it. We're a much better team than we have given them credit for at times this season.

Our budget this season has been very limited compared to many of our rivals so let's hope things aren't too bad.
Still think we're an attractive club to invest in so let's hope others share this view.

  • No, after the home loss to Millwall I really thought we were deep in the shit, could not see the next win.

The comeback against Bolton was critical.
  • This has been a topsy turvy season in a division where many teams are of similar strength. So I am not surprised but delighted with how a team of mostly 'journeymen' have played their hearts out for CAFC and have been very successful. Long may it last
  • No I didn't - like others, at 2-0 down to Bolton I thought it was more likely than not that we would go down.

One small point that's hacking me off is the describing of the current squad as 'League 1 players' or 'journeymen'. I think the current first XI at least have proved they're Championship quality.

SCP's done his bit - it's all down to money now.
  • I thought we would do enough to avoid relegation, half fancied a last minute goal on the last day of the season, so never expected this comfortable run
  • end of season slump... RIP :~)

Before the season started it would have been fair to say (in my opinion) that many of the side were not considered by many fans and foes alike to be of sufficient quality to make a success in the championship. As you say in hindsight, and following your dire misgivings during the Bolton game, the team HAS proved to be of championship quality and not necessarily the 'journeymen' .. notice the inverted commas .. they were presumed to be by many before the start of the season
  • no i didn't but knew we had it in us from previous results against higher teams.

character and nuts shown by the management & players at a critical point in the season when relegation was a distinct possibility.

  • Didn't see it coming at all I thought we may struggle but in my opinion it has been in a large part due to the availability of Andy Hughes his presence has completely changed the way the team plays and allows other players to get in the game easier. Next season will depend on what is available finance wise for CP my big fear is that we have to sell to buy that will mean goodbye to Solly probably and as many have said Lawrie Wilson is no right back.
  • manager of the month for sure, dont want playoffs sorry, but if we can finish in a single digit posistion will be an unbelivable seasonkeep the run going win at home and come august we will be stronger and full of belief. just a pity we were so bobbins at home early on would have been up there with watford palace and hull. cherry pick some talent from the teams that go down and who knows.. glad i renewed think next season could be very optimistic.
  • Definetly think players have proved they can compete in this division.the contrast in home and away form is startling.even when we have been beaten away apart from forest.we havent been turned over by anyone which has always made me think somewhere in there id a decent team.

It is a real tribute to Chris Powell that he has managed the team on such a run of recent success. I am sure that after last season's promotion, Powell expected some cash (sic) with which to strengthen the squad considerably, instead he had to make do and mend with the existing team and a few loanees. The bulk of last seasons' team still constitutes the first team: Hamer, Solly, Morrison, Wiggins, Hughes, Kermorgant, Pritchard, Jackson; with Green, Cort, Taylor, Evina and Stephens for example, still around the squad.
I DO wonder how much Powell will want or need to spend in the close season. These players have done it before, team spirit and confidence must be high, a new influx of players could ruin that vital team chemistry and bonding so essential for success
  • Nice post Lincs but if you stand still you always end up going backwards I understand your point but to get progress surely we need to continue to improve the squad?

quite so Dave .. it will be a very delicate balancing act .. who'd be a manager eh ??!!!!!!
  • Not me mate too thin skinned
  • At 0-2 against Bolton I defy anyone to think this would happen. I am the original Mr Rose Tinted when it comes to Charlton but I thought the season wasn't going to end well.

Delighted it has turned out this way but isn't that why we all love this game....
  • Had a sneaky feeling that April would be a pretty good month for us. Think I predicted us getting 11 points. However, 0-2 to Bolton did give me a sinking feeling. But, true to the paradox that is CAFC, we turned things around in some style.
As we all know, supporting Charlton is never straightforward, but we stick with them through thick and thin ( well most of us do ).
  • I did. We've got a strong spine of team with some really good players. Hamer, Solly, Morrison, Wiggins, Jackson and Kermorgant would get in pretty much every Championship team. I always thought we were underachieving when we were pretty low in the bottom half.

If we sign around 3 good players in the summer we can get promoted next season, I'm sure of it.
  • The little African told me that we will be ok and things will improve my balls just confirmed it
  • given our historical end of season record, I had the paddle out.
  • The team spirit and passion from the players has rolled over from last season, makes the lack of investment all the lot harder knowing we are so close with an unchanged squad (give or take a few players) from league 1. Makes you wonder what may have been, had we invested.
