West Ham already have their own up and coming, higly rated right back, in Jordan Spence. Unless they are selling him on, for bigger money, first and eyeing Solly as a replacement, I can't see Chris going to West Ham.
Fulham, maybe?
You'd hope we'd hold out for big (£5M) money, but I can see him going for £1 -2M, this summer, to keep us going and finance a re-build, ala Jenkinson.
A few games for Cousins, once we are safe, so we can see if he is up to it.
Seriously, why do you say we would accept that for our best player and most saleable asset?
because IMO that'll be about the best offer we get for him.
Because we are reported to be skint or you see that as his worth in the market?
bit of both combined I guess, whilst I think he's a great player I don't think he's in the £5m bracket, yes I personally think he's worth more than £2m but I doubt we'll get more than that for him.
Players are worth precisely what someone will pay for them. If you get a team that has a gap in that position and money to spend the value goes up. If the player makes it known to the management that he won't sign another contract the value goes down. Football fans chat on about transfer fees as if they are set in stone facts. The truth is reported fees vary wildly. Selling clubs report unlikely add ins that they'll never get, buying clubs don't include later stage payments to make it seem as if they've got a good deal. Fans haven't got a scooby, but continue to pointlessly analyse the value of deals that they don't have even a high level view of.
I agree with this. Not because I don't think he is worth more, 3m maybe, but because our financial situation will dictate things and this will be about the best offer we will get. No way will we get near 5m for a right-back. Lowton and Stones are the benchmark so 2m to 3m max. Anyway it will be undisclosed so we can make up any figure we want.
Would the board consider £2m for the best player we have if they are serious about reaching the Premiership and fulfilling their investment ambitions? After all, £2m represents recovery of only 2 months of their reported outlay against the current running costs of the club. Small change and illogical in that context.
Nothing new in that article from a 24 year old blog writer, that has been written before in the last year. Every player has his price, and if the right offer comes in for any of our players, then sadly it will have to be considered.
Agreed, but this would indicate there would be little, if any, hope of the money being used for new players coming in and we hit the downward slide again. Do you think the board has given up on its investment plan after spending millions and continuing to support the club with their own money? Solly must stay if we are to have any remote chance of reaching the top flight next year.
Do you think the board has given up on its investment plan after spending millions and continuing to support the club with their own money?
yes. They are continuing to support the Club as the alternative would be administration. In the meantime they are desperately trying to sell the Club thereby recouping their money. If they don't sell then they can't sustain their 1m per month 'investment' and the future is bleak.
My view is that our best chance of moving forward/getting in premiership would be selling solly. With 2m+ we could get a creative cm and another player and and a right back is not the most important position. We badly need a decent ball playing cm and I believe we would improve considerably. We obviously are not going to be able to finance a transfer apart from selling.
4-5m for Solly, with a West ham player on loan for a year as part of the deal too, then invest 2m of it on a decent creative midfielder, make Wilson 1st choice right back, and use the other 2-3m to cover some debts and i think i'd be fairly happy with that.
Unless the current owners are successful in securing new investment I would expect to see Solly sold this summer. They will need the cash to help finance the ongoing losses.
Has this not always been Charlton though we sell our better players and hope that our manager finds suitable replacements
We have always been a selling club but there have been very different circumstances.
Top dollar for Danny Mills and Lee Bowyer which in turn funded promotion pushes but peanuts for Paul Elliott and Paul Walsh because everyone knew we were skint... and not that much for Shelvey and Jenkinson considering where they are now.
Every transfer window everyone resigns themselves to losing Solly...he is always still with us at the end of it though. Would not surprise me if he moved on as he will personally want a crack at Premier League and the riches it brings but lets see what happens.
It's all very well saying how much we might get for him. The real issue is how much of that could be made available for new players. It's no secret that our financial affairs are in a bit of a mess, so it's likely that a large proportion goes to paying off some debt. The financial fair play rules aren't going to do much to help our situation either.
I'd be totally gutted if Solly went. In my view he's the most consistent quality in our squad. I'd let any other player go ahead of him given the option. If our board have any ambition they'll keep him. Realistically we aren't going anywhere quick with the current squad. If we let the quality go, we'll go straight back down and Powell will be held up as a scapegoat. If the board want the business to be worth anything as going concern, they are going to need a settled squad, with a manager and fans behind the project. Start selling fans favourites and it'll be s**t creek again before long.
I would to. Not only is he one of our most consistent performers (as you rightly say) the financial gain would be minimal for the reasons I stated before. Let's hope West Ham have blown their budget on the extra they had to pay to get the Olympic Stadium.
I think we will be lucky to get over 2 mil for chris as prem full backs seem to be taller nowdays, but we could get a bit more with add ons put into the agreement, but i bet Chris Powell doesnt get a penny to buy any players and will carry on with the loan market like most championship teams now do.
I'd be gutted if he went, but if we do stay up I can't see us staying up next season without strengthening the midfield and at the moment the only way that were going to do that is by selling Solly. If we could use the money to bring in a solid right back that's not spectacular but does the job defensively and strengthen our midfield as well then we'd have to take the offer tbh.

Solly is a year younger, playing in a higher league.
I'd expect 4-5m at least.
