Tablet help

Looking for a decent tablet at a decent price for my daughter's birthday.
Not in the Ipad price range either.

Any suggestions

  • I'd be careful, most of them are crap now and not like they used to be back in the day.
  • Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 get my vote.
  • Is the iPad Mini not able to sneak into your budget?
  • Assuming your daughter is a teenager? ie not an IT/business user, check out the Amazon Kindle fire tablets.

    Like that :)
  • I would recommend buying the tablet of your choice from John Lewis. Two year warranty included at same price you'll pay most other places. Having said that, got my missus' Nexus 7 at PCWorld due to supply problems the week before christmas. Free 1yr Norton doodaah and 50Gb in the Cloud! Still think an extra year's warranty would have been the better bet, but needs must!

What generally is the best tablet to buy? I could run to £400 so the ipad 4 is OK but is it overrated / overpriced??
  • How old is your daughter leftbehind, and what does she want to use it for? Unless there's something she really needs a big screen for, I'd recommend a 7" over a 10" one, to minimise the amount of armache involved. TBH if she's primary aged, I'd just get a generic Chinese Android tablet rather than one of the more expensive branded ones, as it'll give you a chance to see how much she uses it and it'll be less expensive to replace if it gets lost or dropped.
  • Both my kids have the nexus 7. Impressed generally but have some reservations over the charging socket on the device. Have had one replaced due to this and the other can be a bit temperamental. I think it is the slightly rougher treatment they get from kids when plugged/unplugged but it is the biggest criticism i have had.

I have a kindle fire hd. It is nice enough if you have no objections to being tied into amazon (although you can get round that if you are so inclined). A bit bigger compared to the nexus and I think it is a little slower. On the upside the image quality is better when watching videos than the nexus 7.

I know nowt about th ipad mini, had a full size ipad for a bit and found it a little big an heavy for my liking.

  • Try Chinavasion. My 8gb with slot for 32gb cost 75 quid inc 13pds post. Mate has three of different specs for family and happy with all. I suffered the Millwall match on mine, picture quality not the best, but you get what you pay.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. Bought my wife one for Xmas and and she loves it. My mum has bought one as well. Both have the 10" version.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, dad and grandad both have one, they both love it.
  • I got some "Mirtazapine" !

    ...........*Tumbleweed*...................
  • I spent a bit of time comparing the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD before making a decision and went with the Nexus. It does really depend what you want it for though.

Nexus is good for Apps, downloading books from various sources, great screen for films, reasonably quick web browser, but no 3G.
Kindle Fire HD is limited with Apps, screen quality is good and you can get a lead to project the screen onto a TV, which is good if you download films and would rather watch them on a big screen. PLus has 3g.

I didn't particularly need 3G and prefered the slimmer feel of the Nexus. Screen is a lot better too. If Nexus had 3g and HDMI port it would be a 100% guarantee perfect purchase in my eyes.
  • You get what you pay for, the kindle Fire is decrnt but the kindle fire HD is bettet and a great price.
  • If you are into Apple/Itunes etc the IPad 2 is OK. But for half the price I have been very happy with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.
  • I bought a Nexus 7 32gb a couple of weeks ago and it is excellent. Only downside i can see so far is it only has a facing cam but I have a camera to take pics :)
  • I'm posting this on my nexus 7 B-) Not a bad little device think it's cheaper than the others as well, got it for Xmas and the WiFi antennas were broken but Asus repaired it within a week.

Not sure about the other devices which are cheaper they run android so most apps will work, best to read the reviews to see how people find it, I brought a cheap media player from Amazon for £20 compared to the well known brands which cost upto £100 and two years later it still works perfectly

  • If you're going to buy android, go with a Nexus 7, if you're not then I would recommend a iPad Mini
  • My suggestion is keep taking the valium , especially if you're going to Brighton tonight.
  • Thinking of buying an iPad for me and the missus to use (mainly indoors for general internet browsing etc.) and having not used one before I wondered if you are able to setup profiles for different users to log in and out of or is it simply limited to the one user profile? Cheers.

Nope. So if you watch porn on it, she'll know about it.

Unless you download another browser app and hide it in a password protected folder...ahem.

(basically the iPad can only sync to one iTunes a/c at a time, just like an iPhone!)
  • Damn! One each it is then!
  • Got a lenovo in the end kid loved it so did the mrs that she sold her Kindle Fire HD to get one
  • Which Lenovo did you go for?

Any help out there on setting up wifi on a Samsung Galaxy tab 2 v7.0 - My neighbour has BT internet/Wifi but the tab 2 doesn't want to connect to it?

I am able to connect Virgin wifi in my house to the tablet - it asks for the WEP and it connects but this option doesn't seem to come up when trying to connect to BTinternet. I've given up and advised my neighbour to speak to BT but there is reluctance to spend the whole day waiting on the line and conversing with India. Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Cheers
