Howard Webb! The referees' a *anker

edited August 2006 in General Charlton
How the fuk did he book Djimi for his first "tackle", when he clearly won the ball, but not even give Gabbidon a yellow for what seemed to be a deliberate handball!

I can understand that maybe he missed, or couldn't see, that he had won the ball, but even if it was a foul surely that would indicate that a handball in the area deserves a yellow, or even a red!

1 game into the new season and not only is it obvious that the refs aren't going to carry a level of consistency from one game to another, but even worse, they cant even offer it from one incident to another!

I swear the refs were better in Div1!!

Rant over. Hate Mondays. Boy Blob!

  • I'm pretty sure the length and extent of the West Ham protests led him to not give Gabbidon further punishment for the pen.

As for Traore, i'm equally convinced that if he was still wearing the red of Liverpool neither of the two free kicks would of been awarded. The putting the foot out seemed instinctive, but was still a stupid thing today when on a yellow.
  • Totally agree Bart! Really stupid thing to do, especially after being booked a few mins beforehand!!
  • It is a stupid thing to do - from our point of view.

But, i think, on the pitch in a big game you do things instinctively and this is what happened.

What troubles me is that if a player is willing to take a free kick without waiting for a whistle then he should be aware that people will try and block it. That is one of the disadvantages of taking a quick free kick against the advantages of catching a defence off guard.

In my opinion (i don't know what the law is), if you are willing to take a quick free kick then you can expect someone to try and stop it.

If i was a manager, i'd make one of my players stand in front of the ball for every free kick and if the ball gets kicked at him then its not his fault surely?
  • The handball/penalty - Clear cut handball that the ref appeared to have missed. The lino appeared to have missed it too as he initially gave the corner, much to my relief as i was bang in line with the ball and saw it clearly. Eddie murphy IMO swung the decision round, he was frantic and rightly so. Personally, i think the officials bowed to this and awarded the pen, but were reluctant to punish gabbidon further as neither looked like they had a clear view of it. Think gabbidon got very lucky.

Traore, first yellow was harsh. Second yellow was a yellow card in he letter of the law, very sneaky and cleaver by bowyer, very stupid of traore.
Shame it was so early in the game as i feel it killed it as a contest.
We had started off the stronger side. If you still had 11 men on the pitch I am still confident we coud have overturned the deficit and went on to win the game but i suppose we'll never know.
  • thought Bowyer was superb for you Mortain, will be interesting to see if he maintains it.

In fairness to the ref, i think about 2,000 Charlton fans missed the handball as well. I certainly did.

Did you get a good view at the incident at the far end, which ended in Carroll spilling the ball, and Bent putting it away ? My seat was very low so couldn't see properly.
  • WSS you make a good point mate.

Mortain, how lagging was we!! lol
  • Bowyer had a great game, hope he can maintain it. Loved his comments after the game too about loving the club. Hope he has finally grown up and sorted his attitude out but could be wishfull thinking.

Didn;t get a clear view of the carrol/bent incident. My seat is down the end where the away fan are so was a bit far away. Not seen it on tv either so can't comment. (doing a wenger).

04, had a good day out all in all. Ended up going for a few more beers and to the greek without you and your missus. Shame you flaked out and couldn't make it!!!
