  • For getting us out of league one but your time is up, always be a great footballer in my eyes, never a championship manager though! Cue the blind
    .....

So who do you make manager with us having very little money?

Nine home defeats this season. If Powell was not in charge, and some non charlton hero was in charge, then the daggers would have been out a couple of months ago. The home record is not acceptable. Hopefully we will consolidate, and the summer months lead to better times.

He's not above criticism I'm afraid.

He should not be beyond criticism and I have complained about substitutions, selections and tactics but a lot of people make emotive comments that have no specific criticism. Make it constructive and specific then its worth making
  • What will it take, I despair sometimes with Charlton fans.

Yeah pal, lets go sack another manager, it's done absolutely brilliantly for us and for everyone else before that's done it. Lets aim to have a manager every season, then we can be like everyone else and yo yo between divisions. Lets ignore the fact the most successful managers everywhere are the ones that are longest serving. Curbs? Fluke. Dario Gradi at Crewe? Fluke, Alex Ferguson? Ditto, Arsene Wenger? He just doesnt have a clue either, Moyes? I think he must have sold his soul to some one to keep everton in the premier league, I mean he's almost been shown up when they have dodgy seasons but he always comes up trump - but lets ignore that.

Let's ignore the fact that we have spent almost zilch money on a league one squad, and OH MY GOD, WE'RE MID TABLE. The side that went up last year was easily good enough for promotion to the premier league as well, in fact, why didn't they let us skip a couple of seasons and get straight to the champions league? Clearly, Powell hasn't got a clue, working with a load of individuals that -at best- are low championship/high end league one standard. I mean, why aren't we playing like swansea and barcelona?! Let's get in a manager like Adkins who, although he is a good manager, had a big chequebook to help him out, and Di Canio who threw his toys out the pram for not having one big enough to his liking. Lets give one of them a job where they dont have any money and most of the players are league one standard in a championship team. I think they'd both get us to playing promotion playing football with this team...

I'm not just attacking you scabby, sorry if it sounds like a personal attack with the heavy on the sarcasm. But i really think people who want to give powell the sack DO need a slap round the face. Have you become as fickle as Roman Abramovich?! Where has this sudden need for instant success come from?! Sure you're spending money to go there, to support the team. If you can't take it, get out. I know the club will miss your money, but some one else will replace you, eventually. We're Charlton fans. When has it EVER been like we're playing passing football that is like watching brazil and constantly attacking and trying to get goals?!

I just think it's so short sighted, sacking Powell, even if we managed to get Mourinho would be a step backwards. Why? As I said before, you dont achieve anything as a club by chopping and changing a manager when you feel he's "not up to it" (which i hope I think i've established that is not the case, he's been given no money etc).

For me being negative is so easy. If you get proven wrong then you're happy anyway because we're successful, but if you're right you get the little thrill that you must know something about football and got something right. I'm not saying those that are negative are malicious or sad people, or want harm on the club. It's just a human condition to want to be right all the time. For me being negative is the closest you can be to being right all the time, you have some kind of gratification either way, even if you wouldnt like to admit it on here.

If you're right and i'm wrong, fine. Well done. You know more about football than me, Charlton are in league one and Powell is now sacked. Then where are we? Exactly where we were before. No money, we'd probably end up hiring Alex Dyer as caretaker and then full time manager (seeing a pattern?).

Where are we if we sack Powell now? We'd spend a week or two in limbo, with KP probably as caretaker and then hire an average manager (doubt we could afford Adkins, even then, he's only been truelly successful when he's done it with a big chequebook) who may or may not "save us". We spend next season getting a new team together to "gel" which will probably put us in exactly the same position we are now. You'd be saying "NO PLAN B" "AINT GOT A CLUE" and it happens all over again.

If we keep powell and stay up and finish mid table (which i think most likely will happen personally) then what will happen? The owners will probably TRY to put their hands in their pockets to help Powell bolster the squad which is clearly lacking, or we may even have new investment. So then we've got a group of players who want to play for Powell with added quality that, if we sort out our home form, we can challenge for promotion.

I really feel that the negativity about powell and our home form is affecting the players adversely. It's basic sports psychology, put players in a situation where they're surrounded by people who assume they're going to fail, they probably will. Unless they've all got the mental strength of cancer survivors etc that is. Give them, AND THE MANAGER a break. This was always going to be a season where we would consolidate with a side that we got in league one. Personally that's why i think the owners have been so tight with money. They don't want to spend money unless they absolutely have to ie on the team to keep us moving forward. Even if they are looking to sell the club, they have to keep investing in something otherwise the money they've already spent has been completely wasted.

Sorry that this has been a massive word vomit. Just some thoughts rattling off my brain. Apologies if anyone (scabby) feels like i'm personally attacking them, I'm not. I'm attacking the idea of sacking Powell.

tl;dr this season is a consolidation season, the board dont care what football we play as long as we're in the championship next season.
  • Take your blinkered glasses off any other manager and you will be calling for his head get real Powell out now

Did you enjoy your win at The Valley today?

Kept away from here last night on purpose: Thought I was the worlds worst at sprouting s**t when p*ssed/upset/annoyed. Kind of makes me sad how some people really have a go (Pro & Anti ) at Chris Powell & each other, personally think he is doing well with very little backing (financially & "from above"), in the apparent "best 2nd division in the world". But then again, football, like most things in life, are a matter of choice. Everyone is different, though we all Support CAFC.
Would like it though, if the "supporters" (I use the word loosely) who come out with the Addams family songs and racist sh*t did not attend the Valley. Personally I'm glad we have the "Family Club" tag. When He was younger I never thought twice about taking my nephew Joe to games, glad he's grown up and seems a sensible young fella. Would never have taken him to the new den. Seems to me everything has to go right straight away/Now !
If we loose it is not the end of the world (I started going to CAFC v millwall matches in the early 70s, and saw every match between the clubs up to the 0-4 non-event acouple of years back) and losing yesterday does "hurt". But you'll get nowhere demanding CP gets sacked (seriously, who would/could step-in ? DiCanio ?) as whoever replaced him would have the same players and no money.
Just be happy we're in the Championship, look at York City, Luton, etc.

    Smithy? Is that you?

Going to go put Nimrod on the iPod so I can read this in all its intended glory. Bravo that man.
  • I didn't want to post on this thread, as it would bring it back to the top. Now it's been sunk I'd like to say to Scabby and any other "Powell out" idiotic comments, it says more about you than Powell. If Powell keeps us up, it will have been a great effort !

  • In any other job Powell would be a good manager because he has that manager personality. He can talk, people respect him, he can deal with pressure etc. I'm sure the tactics etc aren't all down to him he must get advise from the other coaches. Maybe the problem is with them.
  • I'd bump this if I could.
