Giant killing

There was a phone in on Radio Sheffield during the week about memories of giant killings by your club.

I honestly couldn't think of one worthy of the name in the 45 years or so that I've been an Addick.

Have there been any?

By the way there was a Wendy on about the time they took 55,000 or so to Anfield....but they lost. I don't think he got it......

  • 1-0 win at Blackburn in 94
  • Blackburn away -Pitcher's goal ?

    Coventry away 3-2 ?
  • Weds last season
  • Didn't we beat Sheffield Weds in the 90's 2-0 at the valley when they were in the top league?

Great giant killing run in '23 but either been a "giant" or crap in the cup most of the time since.
  • I didn't think of Blackburn as giants in 94 but I guess it counts. You can't ring Radio Sheffield as an Addick and call the Wendies "giants" or you will never hear the last of it. Probably the best we have done though.

This. the coventry game, especially considering how the match started.

As a Third division team we beat three Division One teams and lost to the fourth,Bolton, ( there's footage on the pathe site if you dig around). That must be some sort of record, bearing in mind clubs took the cup seriously in those days. Think we peaked too early:-)

  • chelsea away.league cup.only home defeat EVER for chelsea under Maurinho

The full story of our 1923 cup run can be found in Bryon Butlers book the Giant Killers.

Blackburn finished second that season and won the league the following year.

  • Does Northwich Victoria not count?
  • We don't do Cup games so it's hardly surprising we have had zero giant killings.

After finishing fourth in 1993 and runners-up in 1994, Blackburn went on the win the Premier League title in 1994–95.

Our win in 1994 at Ewood Park was an incredible achievement.

  • Coentry 2-3 is a good one. I would also count the 2-4 win at Arsenal. We were Prem too but still a major shock to everyone.
  • Beat Liverpool in the league cup, keith Jones with the only goal. Or the 5 4 win over Wimbledon, I'm sure they were a prem team at the time

We drew with Liverpool and got beaten 4 1 in the replay I think. Shaun Newton scored a nice volley.

  • Personally think they should be at least a couple of divisions apart to define an upset into a giant killing, but that's just how I see it....................

  • Only team to beat Chelsea at home under Mourinho in the cup? That's got to count as somewhat of a giant killing...

I agree and we haven't spent as much of our footballing life in the third tier as other mingey clubs .......
As for winning a league fixture or a cup game against a club in the same league that can be a miraculous feat , great result but never a Giant Killing
  • Didn't Barca beat mourinhos chelsea at stamford bridge ....
I thought someone else done them on pens maybe ?

Was there with dad and was sat with his ex-boss who is a Blackburn season ticket holder. Imagine the scene: my excitement and merriment as we scored and the look from my dad, pleading with me to sit down again as a few hundred home fans noticed me leap up and shout yeahhhhhhh!!!
    Happy away days :-)

You're right, Barcelona beat them 2-1 in the first leg on the Champions League Round of 16....but we did it first!

We were Mourinho's only domestic home defeat. In the post match interview he tried to claim that he was still unbeaten at home because we'd beaten them on penalties rather than during the course of normal play.

We got a very winnable home tie against Blackburn in the next round, sailed into a two goal lead to put us within touching distance of a first ever league cup quarter final, but with 15 minutes to go the players luckily remembered that Charlton have a proud history of not participating in the latter stages of cup competitions and gifted them 3 goals. Sickening.
  • Surely beating Arsenal 4-2 in 2004 counts...
  • Winning a league game is not 'giant killing'

It's true we didn't beat them, even their programme for the rest of the season showed that they drew against us.........funny that history doesn't show who they played against in the next round ?
