Smith joins Colchester on loan

From the OS

Michael Smith has joined Colchester United on loan until April 6th, the club confirmed on Friday morning.

The striker has featured just once for the Addicks first team this season, when he started the Capital One Cup match at home to Leyton Orient on August 14th when the O’s progressed via a penalty shoot-out.

Smith could appear in as many as seven Colchester games during his time with the club, starting with Saturday’s fixture against Crewe Alexandra at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The Newcastle-born forward found the net four times while out on loan at Newport County earlier in the season and has been in impressive form for Charlton’s development squad – scoring once and claiming two assists in the 3-0 Professional Development League 2 - South clash against Swansea City on Monday.

The powerful forward also spent time on loan at Accrington Stanley in League Two last season and scored a hat-trick against Gillingham before his spell in Lancashire was cut short due to injury.

Good move for the lad. He is stepping closer to a possible first team place.

  • Good for him. Moving up to league one will be a step up and give a guide to how he's improving.

And free up wages for Gower.

Expect this won't be the last loan move this week or next.
  • Agreed, he has slowly improved his loan destination and hopefully can prove to be worth a new contract, then more games for us.

this. Three out should hopefully mean Gower in.

  • Everywhere he has gone on loan, he has made a difference.
I hope Crouchy is going to be big for us in the future.
  • Is there likely to be a some sort of clause that means we can recall him if needed?

Only that we know that Fuller and Haynes have hamstrings made of straw.
  • Good to see him moving up from his last loans.Like Mambo this will give us the chance to assess him at a higher level to see whether he could play in the CCC next season.

I think in terms of recall clauses that he has to be there for 28 days we then get a 24 hour clause.

Colchester vs Shrewsbury on 20th April could be worth a trip if I can't make it to the Wolves home game.
  • Smith, Azeez and Mambo could yet be the future of this club

    in my opinion of course

  • Smith and Mambo both now in Legaue One and gradually moving up the leagues. Can only be good for us. I know a Newport fan who was very impressed with Smith.

  • Smiths goal average has increased from 1 in 6 before he joined us to 1 in 2 since. Coaching, good management, coincidence or other?
  • I think coaching and good management, plus he's older now. He got about 55 minutes for Colchester yesterday, setting up their goal.
  • I think with him and Harriot around, plus encouraging signs from Cousins and Cook we could have some excitement next season in the young hungry players department.
  • I was at the colchester game yesterday he came on in the first half.Worked really hard up front on his own missed a sitter from bout 2 yards in the second half at the minute league 1 def his level. Was laughing how crap clinton morrison is still moaning at refs couldnt last 90mins.
  • Just scored for Colchester against Coventry to put them 2-0 up at the Ricoh
  • The lads progressing well.
  • Good to hear... they ended up at 2-2 so maybe they should've left him on ;-)
  • Bound to get a chance this season once we're safe.

Brilliant to hear he's scored already for Essex. Look forward to seeing him score against Brizzle!

  • I think he's gonna be a decent player for us in the future
  • Scored their first
  • He should have been given a chance here before being farmed out. He can't be any worse than the powder puff strikers we have had this season
  • keep him chomping at the bit so when he's given his chance he'll take it with both hands. Remember Parker when he went to norwich. Best way to bring in young players in my opinion.
  • Will be good for us next season in League 1
  • Get him back after 28 days, cant be any less of a goal threat than what we had up front today. Be like a new signing!
  • He didn't score today. Bbc and sky sports got the wrong person

Well I had a tenner on him to score at any time 9/4 and i have been paid out as a winner.

Good boy Crouchy - he's going to be big for us one day.

  • Let him work his way up the leagues. Hopefully this time next season he'll be ready to play for us in the Championship
  • Not a good time to bring him back into the squad.
