West Ham v Charlton 63/64

I remember going to the FA Cup tie third round with my dad .We were fourth in Div 2 and they were fourth from bottom in Div 1.My dad said we we will this one son, Eddie Firmani will murder them. I remember telling him that Hewie was injured and David Stocks is playing. Not to worry son, they have a left winger called Sissons making his debut.
Well done dad. Bobby Moore was imperious, Johnnie Byrne ran riot and poor old Stocksie was turned inside out by Sissons from start to finish. We lost 3-0 and Geoff Hurst got one. I said he was alright but he is a bit slow isn't he. I could always spot a player! Whatever happened to Sissons, he was brilliant for the rest of the season and then seemed to lose his way completely. Could have been four WHU players in the World Cup. We rolled over in the cup even then.

Wasn't Mike Rose in goal that day. Remember a Group of us went by bus to Woolwich walked through the foot tunnel 101 bus to East Ham town hall and walked to the Boleyn. My grandfather took me to watch David Stocks in the early 60's who was his apprentice at Siemans (AEI) Woolwich in a pre season Probables v Possibles match at the Valley.

  • Yes he was.It was one of poor old Mike's dodgy games. One under his body and one through his hands.Probables v Possibles, I would love that to come back!
  • My first FA cup game that was. Elder brother took me as a treat, couldn't beleive my eyes in the difference in class between the teams. Severe spanking as I saw it, the only consolation being that we lost to the cup winners.

I think even Eddie had an off day. All in the days before segregation, happy days.
  • I think West Ham went on to win the FA Cup that year so no disgrace losing to them back in the days the Cup actually meant something.
