Players we 'nearly' signed

edited March 2013 in General Charlton
I was just watching AddickFC81's post of the Charlton V Sunderland 4-4 Playoff Final and pondering over how great kevin Phillips might have been in a Charlton shirt and left me wondering how close (if ever) we got to signing him. Anyone know? Who else were we truly close to signing in the past?

.............I recall we went after Stanley Matthews (who the board declined because he was 'too old' and went on to play for another decade at the top level) and also Kevin Keegan (at the time we went on to sign Alan Simonsen).............who else???

  • ........wasn't there also a rumour that Teddy Sheringham was buying a house in Danson Road linked to signing for Charlton at the time he eventually signed for Pompey?
  • Steven Pressley
  • Wow i swear we get this thread every week...
  • Mervyn Day was on Talksport recently and stated that Curbs wanted Sidwell and Bullard: however RM told him that he would have to sell first so that was the end of that.I doubt the latter would have passed the medical as I understand Hull never had the time to make him undertake one. If they had I doubt whether they would have signed him.
Papers stated that Clive Allen had signed and then rocked up at Millwall.
  • I remember us being linked in the paper with Ronaldo and Quaresma who subsequently went to United and Barca LOL
  • Mattheu Flamini
  • dos Santos, the Cost Rican winger that couldn't get a work permit (name escapes me) and the slavic player who was at a Dutch team and ended up disappointing Chelsea (name also escapes me).

For my other team : the legendary Frank McAvennie turned up at Partick did a press conference, did pictures in the jersey but had to nip oot before signing the contract. He nipped up to Parkhead and signed there. Where he was shite.
  • Kezman, Baldock, Gower, Alex Ferguson
  • Didn't Pardew try to sign Edgar Davids in our last year in the Prem?

  • Eidur Gudjohnsen when we signed Jensen according to Peter Varney last Friday
  • Tim Cahill
  • Jeremy Goss.
  • Jermaine Defoe..............
  • Jason Puncheon was driving to the ground to sign. Parky told we'd be able to get better when the takeover happened.

Takeover never happened, Puncheon now playing in the premier league.

Eubanks-Blake. It was him or Andy Gray but SEB had an outstanding GBH charge so Pardew went with Gray.

He'd never have formed a partnership with Chris Owelumo anyway : - (

  • Cory Gibbs.

There was talk of him joining us for a couple of years but he never appeared.
