Your worst Premierhsip Charlton XI

edited March 2007 in General Charlton
... following on from the other thread ....

Based only on (all) their Premiership performances for us - no matter if they were great in Div 1/Championship, cup matches etc.

How about:

Ilic
Barness, El Khalej, Tiler,Traore
Newton, Redfearn, Murphy, CBW
Jeffers, Cole

Subs: Petterson, Bothroyd, JFH, Konchesky-the-left-back-not-the central-midfielder, Mustoe/Pouso

Manager: Les Reed (sorry Les)

PS Murphy had about 8 good games for us in a season-and-a-half of toss even though the whole team was built around the prima donna

  • Don't think Newton ever played for us in the prem, he certainly left before the latest stint started. Anyroad, it's harsh on the lad.

Pretty much think this is right. But I'd have Salako instead of Newton. Campbell-Ryce (bless) on the other wing. CBW in the middle for Murphy and JJ/Superkev up front, in a mad striking disasterzone.
  • How about Jesper Olsen? Didn't he put in a subs appearance? I'd have him instead of Murphy. Then there was the Manure fullback who's now at West Ham Mr Spector, I don't remember one good game, let alone eight. I'd pick him ahead of Barness. Isn't Faye also worse than Murphy? What about Bagherri, (?spelling) didn't he put in a subs appearance?

Newton played a few games in our first season in the EPL but I think was sold after promotion from Div One.

Worst Prem players have to include Jeffers and Cole up front, no argument from anyone surely?

Did Petterson ever play in the Premiership for us? I think he'd moved on by then?

The only goalkeepers I remember are Ilic, Joyce, Kiely from the first couple of seasons.

    Yes he did.
  • He was in goal the season we went down

yes, I am being too harsh on Newts, he played the year we went down and never really did the business. But Olsen Blomqvist is a good call ... and Spector has to be in. But you can't really count Bagheri, Caig etc who didn't even play half a game for us.

    So how about:

    Ilic
    Spector, El Khalej, Tiler,Traore
    Blomqvist, Redfearn, CBW, Salako
    Jeffers, Cole

Subs: Petterson, Bothroyd, JFH, Barness, Murphy
    Manager: Les Reed

PS Petterson half a game when Ilic got any talent knocked out of him at Stamford Bridge and played the next game I think .... and at the end of the season Royce knackered his knee in a game at the Valley and Petterson came on at half time and played the last couple of games.

When you say Olsen do you mean Blomqvist (?spelling)? If so I can only remember him playing against Exeter in the Cup. Can't remember any Prem games.

Spector has to be included for the absolute 'mare he had against Man City when we lost 5-2 at home and Sinclair made a complete mug of him.
  • llic wasn't as bad as some are makign out, Petterson was worse, Salmon not much better
  • [cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite]When you say Olsen do you mean Blomqvist?
yes!!!! Did he not play in the prem then?

Ilic was a liability after his Stamford Bridge injury, had he been dropped months before he was, we could well have stayed up. Assuming Royce and not Petterson would've played that is. Salmon never actually played in the Prem did he??

Yes I meant Blomquist, my cranial hard drive crashed!! If you are sure he didn't play in the Prem then he can't be included.
  • That wasn't Sasa thought was it? Curbs should of have dropped him for Royce, but didn't.

    Petterson was far far worse

Did Salmon play in the Prem? Actually we really had a goal-keeping weakness during the first Prem season. Illic rose from nowhere the previous season but although he was a good shot stopper his positional play was week. Petterson was worse. He must be because I think he's had about ten or so different clubs and never stayed long at any. Royce was inexperienced but was probably the best of the three but he was injured most of the time. Or maybe our best keeper that first Prem season was Steve Brown....:-)
  • Blomqvist definitely made a few subs appearances in the league, but if he didn't start one then maybe he should be ruled out. Time for Danny boy to come back of the bench (shame, I know he likes it there).

Much as I hate the miserable big time Charlie scouse pr*ck, I can't see how he qualifies because he did put in some decent performances. In that case you might as well put in Denis in the last minute Rommedahl.........stands back and waits for torrent of abuse.:-)
  • Murphy was a liability for most of his first season here , and returned to form after a very, very bright start to last season.
  • I'm 99% sure Salmon never played in the Prem for us. I think he went to Ipswich as cover after our first promotion season.
  • He didn't, I got a bit mixed up

I do understand the point you are making but he did have some good performances whereas the others mentioned were bad all the time. That's the point I'm making. Why not go for Mustoe instead of the Scouser?
  • We had to suffer whole season of Murphy's lethargy.
Mustoe filled a gap for a few games, not great by any means, but not so terrible.

  • Salad you mean to tell me you think Faye is better than Murphy - you're mad.

Petterson HE PLAYED IN THE 4-3 VILLA GAME AND WAS SENT OFF
    Sankofa
    El kHalej
    Traore
    Tiler

    Redfearn
    Faye
    That jesper bloke
    Salako

    LISBIE
    JEFFERS
  • With Traore as 'Man Of The Match'
  • Oi, Salad! Barness is a mate of mine so there is no way I am letting you put him in the side! Christ, he left us and had a couple of pretty decent years at Bolton and played in the Prem for them so he can't be that bad.

    My team....

    Petterson

    Spector
    El Khalej
    Fish (in his last season)
    Traore

    Mustoe
    Faye
    Bart-Williams
    Redfearn

    Jeffers
    Hasselbaink

Barness was one of my favourite players, but he seemed like a bag of nerves a lot of the time - can't actually recall if got many Prem games for us, I was glad he was able to keep playing at the top level with Bolton. Did I read recently he is playing for Grays now? I had already dropped hom from the team by the time you posted anyway!

By the way you have to consider all of a player's Prem games for us, so there is no way you are having Feesh in there - he was a hero.
  • Yeah, Feesh was a bit of a naughty one, just that in his last couple of games he was so bad that he really was one of the worst I have ever seen. However, overall you are right in saying that he was a decent player for us. Probably would have to put Tiler in there instead seeing as Diawara is not yet proven either way.

As for Barney, you are right in saying that he was nervous in his Prem days with us, the reason being that he knew he was on a knife edge with Curbs and it was always 60/40 against him to be picked for the next game in his view.
