Give Powell Some Help

Would like to start by saying that Powell was excellent last year and managed to get 20 odd players to gel very quickly. We were very good in a poor league and deserved to be champions but Powell wasn't really tested tactically.

This year I am still pleased with Powell, I'm happy with the season overal so far but obviously slightly worried with our recent form. Powell is doing a good job under difficult financial conditions, he seems popular with the playes and loved by the fans. Powell and the back room staff are still very inexperienced in management, Powell, Dyer and Matthews all had experience with reserve and youth teams prior to their appointments and no first team experience. Would there be any harm in asking Hart or Peacock to sit on the bench (not as subs) and provide a different view point and another set of eyes? All other young managers seem to have an older coach in the dug out. Good or bad idea.

Hope this doesn't sound anti powell because I am not. I hope he is here for a long time with improvement year on year although I wish he would give some of the u-21's a go from the bench but then again I dont see them train day in day out.

  • Peacock is involved, watches games from the directors box.
  • Thanks, is he on the phone providing advice during the game, has a chat with Powell after or just there for a day out
  • He's involved. He takes coaching sessions.

  • i said on the post match thread would like to see hart on the bench to give powell some advice or from the stands ala dario grady at crewe.
  • Reviewing Paul Hart's managerial record I'd rather he stuck with the kids
  • He didn't need any help last season when we got 101 points

He got help last season from Dyer, Mathew and Peacock
  • Matthews seems like he's gonna have a big future in the game.
  • Isn't Peacock's title 'Football Adviser' or something? Which suggests he already does what is being suggested.

this, i've seen so many people calling for Paul Hart to take over as manager or lend "some experience". He's done worse than nothing as a manager, what the hell do people think he'll bring??? Just because he's older =/= better manager.

Great record as a youth coach, so we'll leave him there

    This and this.

  • Think Powell could take a leaf out of Curbs book in that he often watched from the stand particularly first half, running down to the pitch if required.

You do get a completely different view of the game from the stand, having said that not many other managers do it, but may be worth a try.
  • I think this is a good shout, an extra wise head on the bench could help. Lennie Lawrence has made a career out of it
  • He should talk to the bloke who sits behind me. He seems to know everything..............
