Peter Wakeham RIP

Remember his short career with us, he came shortly after Willie Duff left. Had a great yellow Ford Zephyr car, and saw him have a good joke with Johnny Sewell about it.

  • A 'name' from my youth when he and Mike Rose were rivals for the jumper before the arrival of Chas Wright ... RIP
  • Yes, remember him well. As Lincs says, he and Mike Rose vied for the keeper spot.
    RIP.
  • First Charlton goalkeeper I saw live.

    RIP
  • Joined us in the summer of 1962 I think, from Sunderland. Virtually ever present during the 62/3 season. One of my early favourites. RIP Peter.
  • Remember Peter Wakeham so different in physic from Willie Duff. Such a shame to hear of his passing, brings it home how old some of us are now.

My first goalies to see live were Reid and Duff, I just missed the great Sam Bartram.

    RIP Peter.
  • RIP. Just before my time but I may have seen him as a very small boy.
  • A very competent Keeper who joined us from Sunderland and if I remember correctly was almost an ever-present in his first season with the Club. RIP
  • In the picture on the OS , Marvin Hinton is on the right and I think the forward could be Cloughie.
    R.I.P. Peter.
  • Strangely enough reading one of Cloughs autobography at the moment where he gets a few mentions. Was replaced at Sunderland by Jim Montgomery. RIP

  • RIP i remember him too, good keeper.
  • RIP,Peter Wakeham.
My first season,63/64,saw both Peter and Mike Rose contest the keeper's spot.Very sad to see the departure of one of the first players that I saw at The Valley.
  • RIP Peter
  • Good goalie. RIP
  • Sad news he was the keeper when I started going to the Valley as a 12 year old. He and Charlie Wright are my all time favorite keeper's for Charlton.
    RIP Peter.
  • That is a shame.Along with a lot of youngsters we used to pester the players for autographs .He was such a nice bloke and had time for all of us.I remember in 62/63,we drew with Huddersfield 0-0.Peter was given nine out of ten along with Ray Wood, the ex Man Utd keeper .RIP Peter.

Anyone remember this keeper. Played 27 times for Charlton in the mid 1960's and sadly passed away in January.

Yes, not particularly tall for a keeper if I remember RIP Ken.

I remember him. He got cross for some reason on one occasion and bowled the ball really fast at the corner flag and took it clean out of the ground!

That really impressed me as a young lad and I later discovered that he played Minor Counties cricket too which perhaps explains his accuracy.

Welsh International,I think he was their number 2 to legendary Arsenal Keeper Jack Kelsey at the World Cup in 1958 the last time they qualified.

    RIP Ken.
  • RIP Ken. I remember him, but not the circumstances in which we signed him. I think it was 64, does anyone remember. Len??

I think he was signed to replace Peter Wakeham effectively and give Mike Rose some competition as he had shown himself to be shaky on occasions.

Maybe but Mike Rose was 1st choice playing 25 league games 64/65 Peter Wakeham 10 and Ken Jones 7. The following season KJ played 18 to Rose's 8, Charlie Wright's 9 and Noel Dwyer's 6.
  • I remember when we lost our unbeaten run to Pompey.Next up was bottom of the table Scunthorpe at home.We lost 0-1 and Jones had a blinder.I also remember when he played for us he got the hump with some of the crowd and stuck his two fingers up.

R.I.P Peter and Ken in my opinion you were both a better keeper than Mike Rose. I can still remember that game against Scunthorpe when ken Jones did indeed play a blinder .(did Ian Lawther score the winner). As for sticking two fingers up to the crowd Mark Hazelwood repeated this act about 20 years later.
  • I don't remember Ken Jones but I do Peter wakeham. RIP
