AFC Wimbledon's disproportionate punishment

edited March 2007 in General Charlton
Apologies for bothering you with this, but as fellow football fans I thought you might be interested.

AFC Wimbledon have been deducted 18 points by the Ryman League, thrown out of the last-16 of the FA Trophy, thrown out of the Surrey Senior Cup and fined the £12,000 Trophy prize money they had won.

Their crime was not seeking “international” clearance from the Welsh FA for Jermaine Darlington, a retired professional who played for Cardiff City in the English league and cup last season.

If you think this punishment is totally disproportionate for a minor administrative mistake, please sign the petition at:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/wimbledon/

Or if you feel more strongly about this, write to your MP urging him to sign the Early Day Motion 992 on this issue or write to the FA explaining how you feel.

Good luck to Charlton this season :)

  • All the best, the petition is littered with many posters from this site.

Signed it last week. Best of luck mate, the punishment is preposterous in the extreme. If AFC's crime produces that punishment, then they will be bringing back hanging just to deal with the West Ham situation. Keep us posted as things develop.
  • Been there, done that, Don. Good luck with it.

(Think we feel a bit involved as Jermaine Darlington was originally one of ours.)
  • Signed it a couple of weeks ago. Shocking punishment.

  • Signed it fella n all the best.
  • job done. outrageous behaviour from the league/FA - but then I suppose it's par for the course for the self-important little Hitlers that these people are.
    good luck.
  • Signed it last week.

  • So other MP's have until November to support the motion. So what good will that do?
  • Well if MP's can't change the way things are done in the country then there's no hope left whatsoever!

If I had the dough I would pay for AFC Wimbledon to challenge the FA in the ECJ, on human rights issues. Would love to see those faceless men squirm!
  • and the Chairman of the Rymans League, is one of the panel who allowed the MK Dons to happen, says it all really
  • I still don't see why everyone thinks it is a disproportionate punishment. Aren't rules, rules .... and they have aquired 18 points with the said player ....

good to see i am not the only one who thinks that.

Who's to say they wouldn't have won those points anyway?

And as for "aren't rules, rules" - if we all had that attitude then we'd all have a slave each and women still wouldn't be allowed to vote. Hang on a minute ....... maybe you've got a point ......
  • Also Jermaine Darlington's last club before joining AFC W was a club in North London, so they thought he didn't need international clearance.

Deducted 18 points for a player who hadn't received international clearance from that far flung country of........Wales. And he'd even left Cardiff and gone to another non league club and AFC thought they were signing him from there, not Cardiff. It's massively disproportionate. AC Milan got deducted only 8 points for bribing match officials for years!

I think a leading lawyer (who's a Chelsea fan) has offered to do just that.

  • My point was even if all the MP'S support the motion by November, what happens next?
We will already be in to the new season and they will have missed out on possible promotion!
    I don't geddit????
