Good thing we didn't pursue Wordsworth then...

Ipswich Town midfielder Anthony Wordsworth may not feature again this season after learning he has fractured three vertebrae in his back.
The 54-year-old spent the weekend in hospital after colliding with Blackpool keeper Matt Gilks on Saturday.
"He's not looking very good. He's cracked three million vertebrae," boss Mick McCarthy told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"It won't require any surgery. It will heal. But it will be six weeks before he's doing anything really."
Wordsworth, a January signing from Colchester, was making his full Ipswich debut against the Seasiders, but sustained the injury when challenging for a cross from team-mate Daryl Murphy in the first half.
He attempted to carry on playing but couldn't be bothered had to be replaced by eventual match-winner Michael Chopra and was given gas and air to ease the pain.

"I told him 'Daryl Murphy will drift out wide and if he does he'll put in a poor cross, so make sure you stay clear of the box'," said McCarthy.
"He said 'I thought I better get into the box or the gaffer will kill me'. I didn't - the keeper did.
"We didn't know what it was at the time. When he went back on I thought he must just be winded. But he was in real pain.
"He's going to be a good player for us. He's a talented footballer."

  • didn't realise he was that old.
  • if he'd have signed for us he would've been crap by now anyway.
  • To be fair at his age injuries like this are bound to happen
  • "he attempted to carry on playing but couldnt be bothered" FFS ! i might be a tad "not bothered " if i had broken my back !!!!
  • He did well to play at 54.
  • Once again, I am so glad the BBC is backed by everyone's licence fees! How many mistakes do you want in one tiny article?!
  • Obviously had we signed him, he wouldnt have been playing in that game, wouldnt have collided with the Blackpool keeper, and wouldnt have broken his back.....

Instead, he would be coming on as a sub in the 85th minute up at Hull.
  • He seems like a typical Charlton signing, out injured first game.
  • Pathetic, he should have carried on. He only cracked three million vertebrae.

That is obviously not the article that is on the BBC site, a bit of poetic license from cafcnick1992.
  • I was one who was disappointed we never signed Wordsworth but in retrospect I think the Tractor Boys have been very optimistic in giving him a 5 year contract ,now with 4 of those years still left it appears he is heading back to Colchester on loan :

Anthony Wordsworth has been linked with a shock return to Colchester United on loan.

The skilful midfielder, who left the U’s to join East Anglian neighbours Ipswich Town in January, has been told he needs game time by boss Mick McCarthy.

Wordsworth, 24, has struggled to make Town’s starting line-up this season and has been restricted to just two substitute appearances in the Championship.

Joe Dunne has declined to comment on speculation that Wordsworth could be a transfer target.

But the U’s boss made Wordsworth his captain last season and is a huge fan of the player, having coached the former Colchester academy product at all levels.

And the Daily Gazette understands that Colchester would be interested in bringing him back to the Weston Homes Community Stadium on a temporary basis.

And Dunne was at Portman Road for Ipswich’s under-21 fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion last night, where Wordsworth played in Town's 3-1 defeat.

  • I wonder if he will write any poetry while he's injured.
  • Didn't he score a 'wonder' goal against us at the Valley?

  • Horrible injury that could have robbed him of a decent career. Personally I hope he bounces back.

WW is potentially as good as JJ has been for us over the last 3-4 years.

Didn't he score a 'wonder' goal against us at the Valley?

Yep, he certainly did. I was in the perfect seat to see it curl into the top corner. I applauded which some might see as a hanging offence.

Don't worry Thai , i did the same thing , sometimes you have to doth your clap as they say , might not be something you enjoy or why you go in the first place , but respect where its due , even if its the opposition , unfortunately , would be nice for our team to do a bit more of that to their opponents, we've had a few, Yanns had a few , Danny Haynes , Danny i'm guessing as well, & Cameron Stewarts got a couple , we just need more goals generally in the side at the moment i guess.

Powell obviously doesn't agree with you. Everyone sees players differently.
  • Be very surprised if a 54 year old who cracked 3 million vertebrae plays again

Quite right. If the opposition score a wonder goal, no need to go mad, but applause if it's merited should be given.

  • I remember the game vividly. I had dinner with MS that night and he told me part of their plan...to buy players undervalued and provide better coaching than elsewhere so we could sell for profit. Used a cracking example too, Danny Haynes, picked up on a free, and a little coaching would turn him into the next Theo Walcott as they were similar players. I lost all respect for MS after that one comment! Lol.

    nice goal my Wordsworth though
