Internet without phoneline help please

Cancelled our Virgin tv and internet this week and have never had an active phone line in the flat.

Just want a reasonably good internet connection that is relatively cheap.

Can you get just internet without having a phone line (ie using the existing cable that Virgin installed) or do we have to get a phone line installed?

And can anyone recommned any good service providers for this?

    You can get a mobile broadband dongle, about £80 for a year, it's ok for most things but useless for youtube/music streaming

    As you're paying for line rental and get landline calls free on most contracts these days, you may aswell have a blower with the internet and only use it to call other land lines, call mobiles from your mobile.

    A few years back, when my broadband speed was rubbish, I did look into this and contacted a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) that would install a piece of kit which bounced a signel off their nearest sender. Unfortunately they couldn't get a signel to the nearest one!
    There's also satelite broad band from people like this satelliteinternet.co.uk/
    I have no idea whether they are any good or offer competitive prices. I guess you may also lose your signal whenever the weather is bad as you do for satelite TV?

    Possibly not unless you are already a Sky customer. It depends what you want for your money. I use Talktalk, pre-pay a year's line rental to get it discounted down to £9.50 per month and incl the free calls - any time of day - package including international calls, which I use a lot. BT can't get anywhere near being competitive and Sky lose out because their calls package is more and I don't think they discount the line rental.

    I was one of the early adopters because I was hacked off with BT ripping me off (and I don't have cable). I must say that in the early days Talktalk's customer service was dreadful. But it now appears to be much better. Some say they have had billing issues but I never have paying by direct debit.
    A couple of years ago my wireless router died (it was mine - not theirs) and they replaced it with one of theirs free of charge.
    I live a way away from the exchange so I do pay extra for a high speed broadband connection which comes with unlimited downloads. (This was installed by an Openreach engineer as all the cabling is BT's of course). Doubt that anyone in the London area would have to bother with that though.
    Anyway, without the speed boost I pay £11.50 a month for all calls (except to 0870 or mobile) and broadband having paid £114 up front for a year's line rental. Cheap and cheerful really.
    I also don't know what sort of "new customer" deals might be available at the moment but you can check that on something like uswitch.com of course.

    I use giff gaff and they allow thethering of wireless devices , works out £10 a month for phone and internet on a rolling contract , works fine for me .

    BT have been fine for me. 80mb infinity fibre optic broadband for £13 a month.

    I've just switched from BT to TalkTalk (and taken their YouView TV package as well). The price of my BT package gradually crept up and up, including an extra £10/month since we were regularly exceeding our allotted 10gb/month broadband usage (in our house we now have a PS3, an iPhone, two iTouches and two iPads!). Go on to MoneySupermarket and do a price comparison - I bet TalkTalk will come out near the top.

    I would not recommend Sky. I have trouble with the broad band dropping all the time and the speeds are becoming unacceptable compared to Virgin and BT.
