Addicks swoop for non-league striker

by Tony Hudd
CHARLTON have completed the £50,000 signing of Dulwich Hamlet striker Chris Dickson on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

The deal was agreed on Monday after the 22-year-old made an instant impact, scoring twice on his Charlton debut for the reserves in last week's 5-1 win over Fulham at Motspur Park.

The move is good news for former club Erith and Belvedere who had a 25 per cent sell-on clause inserted when he moved to Dulwich last year.

  • Umm very interesting, looks like a great prospect.

    On the O/S as well

    Dickson signs
  • looks like he's already spent some of his signing-on fee on a watch !!

note he can't play for the 'first team' which tends to suggest he can play for the ressies.
  • cue moans about "why didn't we pick him up from Erith and Belverderererere" :-)

And a pre-season game not far away at Champion Hill Sainsbury's to look forward to.
  • Why didn't we pick him up from Erith and Belverderererere?

    It's a disgrace ;)

I thought Pard's was scouted in his playing career, when he was at Dulwich Hamlet as well.

A tad ironic, although if we we had picked Dicko up at E+B then pre-season would have been a bit samey.
  • Can we loan him out now, to a league one club for example, to get him some higher level experience than he has had?
  • Does anyone else think the transfer window should not apply to signings from non league teams? It seems ridiculous to me that it should apply.

I don't diagree, but it's a big step from semi-pro football at Dulwich Hamlet to the Premiership and then be dunked straight into a relegation battle.

Signing him now will give him plenty of time to get to the level of fitness required.

Agreed, this is definately one for the future and a punt at best. He isn't even near playing in the top levels of non-league, and at 22 is no youngster either.

He must have something though, otherwise the club wouldn't of risked it.
  • He seems to know where the back of the net is, which is good enough for me, he's a punt, but so was Ian Wright.
  • He scored two for the reserves which says something about his quality, also if you are a decent finisher, fitness levels aren't quite so important..
  • Any signing is a punt to a lesser or greater degree be it age, experience, injury, country, etc, etc. It's not a huge fee by our standards and one that we could possibly recoup if he's not good enough for us but can do it at a lower football league level.

He obviously has something about him but two goals against a very young fulham reserve team are not enought to say that he should be playing in the first team straight away IMHO.

Let's hope he learns at the training ground, improves and scores a shed load of goals in the Prem next year but let's not burden him with too much expectation too soon.

I accept the point about him needing time. It just seems ludicrous to me that the rules on the "window" are so restrictive.
  • His surname does not appear to be "Bent", which could be an obvious draw back for a striker.
  • He has been given the moniker 'Dicko'

He will go far that lad ;-)
  • New front four?
