January is a difficult month to assess as most teams only played four games and some only played three. If you want the good news first, the team that has climbed the most places over the month is a little club from SE7 - from 18th to 12th. Burnley have climbed five places to 8th while the biggest fallers are Middlesbrough, Bolton and Notts Forest which have all dropped three places – Middlesbrough lost all three January games.
In terms of form, Leicester City won all four games and scored 100% albeit against lower opposition. Charlton recorded 93%, the second highest, which would have been 100% if the team leading after 80 minutes could opt to finish the game there and then.
There were few outstanding performances aside from the teams mentioned already. Most teams had an averagely difficult month in terms of opposition and scored an average number of points. Huddersfield Town rescued their month thanks to a win in the last days of the month over our friends on the 75 bus route (does it still run that route?).
The first column of the form stats is significant in Charlton’s season. We are the only club that hasn’t won two consecutive home games having only kept two clean sheets at home.
If you are looking for impressive runs, Cardiff City have now scored 13 consecutive games away from home; Blackpool surprisingly have decent run of 9 games. At home, Middlesbrough have scored in every game. And if we need to get gloomy, Crystal Palace have scored 3 or more at home more than any other side. However, another ‘Dennis in the last minute’ type day will ruin the longest run of games undefeated at home.
