I was far more concerned about losing Solly in this window than bringing in anyone that while we all pat powells back as soon as he joins, turns out to be a dud and helps in no way to achieving our first goal which is to stay in this division.
Cut a long story short, bar the let mess up against Wednesday we had won 3 on the spin, why the panic, I am happy with the cureent starting XI and more impotantly, I find them all likeable players.
Put it this way, people are going to fret about us losing Solly right up until the day he does eventually go.
There’s two types of people in this world. ones that climb fences when there's a fence to be climbed and ones who climb fences that aint even been strung up yet.
Our good selves and Derby were the only two teams in the Championship who didn't bring anyone in.
We may well have been close, but its clear that we aren't signing anyone unless we ship people out first.
You are right. But at least we didnt have to sell Solly or Stephens just to keep the ship afloat, which was what I feared around November time.
Personally think their continued presence in the ranks is more to do with a lack of interest. An offer in the 2m region would have seen either go imo. Don't buy the 2.6m turned down for Stephens.
Barnsley's young fullback went to Everton for £3m apparently .Whether that is a true figure as a headline amount and what part of it is based on appearances/caps /sell on fees etc. who knows ,but i would judge Solly worth more that £2m on that basis alone.THis is unless ,basically, we have to sell to survive and no-one was prepared to meet a lower asking price. That also assumes however that someone at the club thinks that we can survive to at least the next window without having then to engage in an immediate fire sale perhaps because we will not have been relegated by then .
The more I see, the more I think CP and the board are re-shaping the squad for next season... no one knows what the budget for signings (and annual losses) might be for 2013/14 but Mr Slater has always been clear that this season was about consolidation and next year is a push to the top six. I really hope that we are able to secure the players needed to help this squad and it was a relief not to lose any of our top players this window...I trust that the same thing happens over the summer with extensions agreed for the key members of the squad.
Squad was unbalanced and thin already. We now have I presume two players that are regular benchwarmers that are also now very disaffected by yesterday's events. Both will want out if not next week then in the summer. Can we call upon them and expect 100% commitment ? If BWP does go next week then our strikforce will comprise of Yann, Fuller and Haynes. The latter two are like fine bone china. If I was convinced that seriously red was right and yesterday's inactivity was a precursor to a "squad re shaping" in the summer I might feel happier but I am sitting more in the camp that subscribes to us not being able to afford any incoming either now or in the summer.
SHG: " Can we call upon them and expect 100% commitment ?"
I'd say Yes; they're contracted to Charlton, their bills are paid by Charlton and if they want to get good contracts in the summer they'll work as hard as ever.
I also imagine both would want to be part of a Charlton outfit having a tilt at the Premiership next season, if it's to be. They've got enough incentive - beyond professional pride - to perform. It may be unlikely that they would stay, but they'll surely try.
This is the highest level Danny Green has played at and is a big step up from playing regular football with Dagenham and Redbridge. Plus he is still relatively close to the first team if he can get consistency in his form.
Someone like him should really want to stay at a club like Charlton.
As for BWP then at this point of his career then he should also want to stay at Charlton and fight for his place - as it is unlikely a top Championship side or above is going to come in for him.
Let's be very clear: Mr Slater stated the other night at the VIP meeting and 18 months ago at Bromley Addicks that the aim this year was to finish mid-table this season... and then push on next season.
BWP is out of contract this summer and Swindon might be a perfect place for him to repeat what he did for us. According to a regular poster Danny Green is contracted until 2014 and he will want to play at this level for Charlton or another club and will be working hard for that to happen.
Unlike previous administrations at Charlton I don't think anyone can fault the professionalism and work ethic of this squad.
