Kit clashes

edited January 2013 in General Charlton
There's been mention on a couple of threads about Ben Hamer's kit looking quite a lot like the Blackpool strip.
I also noticed during the Cup game (God, I must have been bored) that the Hudds goalie was wearing an identical kit to the ref - yellow shirt, black shorts, black socks.
Now, this doesn't bother me really, but I said to my mate at the time that there are so many laws in football that sometimes seem petty and outdated, so I'm surprised that avoiding any kit clash like this appears not to be enforced. I mean, there is, I suppose, a theoretical chance that the ref and the goalkeeper will be close to each other and for this to cause a split second error for another player. The Hamer/Blackpool shirts even more so.

As an aside, I would personally prefer it if the goalkeepers wore the same socks and shorts as the rest of their team and only had a different shirt.
Like in the good old days! :-)

  • I mentioned this to Glovepup via Twitter on Saturday. Their keeper also had a yellow kit on like the refs. I'm surprised they really didn't notice it.

I like the idea of a different keeper jersey with standard shorts and socks too. I've never understood the whole sock changing thing when they clash, when some teams don't even change shorts when they clash.
  • I guess its so that if there is a tangle of legs the ref can tell who kicks who.
  • I highlighted this on the match thread - seems odd. Even my 11 year olds have to make sure keeper's top doesn't clash with anyone elsae on the pitch.
  • I have been meaning to bring this up so this seems like a good time. In the valley review it shows sponsorship for our 3rd choice kits, but what are they. Hamer's kit did clash with Blackpools kit so that was a good time to use it. WHAT IS THE TEAMS 3RD KIT THIS SEASON?

Torquay played Oxford U just before xmas. They both wore all yellow, albeit a very slight different shade. I've never seen anything that ridiculous in terms of clashing kits.

I'm not sure why he was wearing the purple kit anyway. Isn't white his first choice kit? Nothing there to clash with Blackpool's kit.

  • Jesus Christ.
  • Jesus Christ.

    Thanks for that. Very insightful.
  • It clashed with the yellow of the ref... so i am assuming that their keepers kit was fine then

Don't know. I think Torquay were at home, but they were definitely both wearing all yellow in the 1st half. One of the teams may have changed 2nd half. I saw it on the Football League Show.

  • Oh ok covered end I bet that was a weird one for fans of both clubs! 'oh what team has got the ball now' like school playground footy ;)
  • We must be one of the very few clubs who try to wear our first choice kit (or top at least with red shorts occasionally) where possible. Some of the away sides this year have worn garish second kits when there has been no clash - Udders second kit is actually harder to distinguish from ours than their first kit (I have colour perception issues). Likewise, Blackpool could easily just have worn their first kit with tangerine shorts as I have seen them do on the telly. Peterborogh could have played in blue, as could Ipswich (although the white kits are better for distinguising purposes). I do undertsand the commercial reality though.

That was Torquay v Northampton Town - Northampton only brought their lime green away kit (which is stupid, seeing as their home kit of dark red would have been fine), so Torquay changed into their away kit at half time.
  • In my opinion clubs should always wear their first choice kit as much as possible unless there is a drastic clash. For instance we wore black at both Burnley & Wolves but I've seen us play in red at both venues before.

I also hate black kits, the only person who should be in black is the ref.
  • I remember Deano was made to wear the 2nd GK kit when we were in the PREM ages as it was grey and therefore it didn't clash with the ref's black kit unlike the 1st GK kit which was black.

So I don't know if the rules have changed since then or am I imagining that?
  • Does anyone remember when we had to wear the Palace away kit at Selhurst early/mid eighties? They'd just changed their home kit to red and blue stripes and we turned up with our red kit and was told we couldn't wear it.

Oh I don't know - I quite liked it at Highbury in 2001. I had tears in my eyes when Jason Euell scored our 4th. Sad, but true.

The game when Tony Lange broke his ankle and Gritt went in goal?

Was it their yellow 'Virgin' one? I think we lost 2-0? I think I was there.

  • We used to wear our away kit at Pompey - white 05/06, black 06/07 and our white away 05/06 at Everton even though there was no clash.

The game when we wore the palarse kit was in 83, Simo was playing.
  • Think it was a light blue kit, remember booing when they came out and then Palace came out, confused the hell out of everyone.

Sure it was an Easter Monday game but it wasn't the game when Gritt went in goal.
  • Micky Paye made his debut in that game, played the next game and was never seen again.
  • A goalkeepers kit is just a another money making ploy. I much prefer the old days when it was a green top with whatever the rest of the team were wearing in the shorts & socks department.

Don't keepers get to choose their colours these days? Like Robbie Elliot with that bloody awful pink kit?

Me too and I am sure a couple of seasons ago the keeper had to change his top due to a clash with the officials
