Ref yesterday

Bit surprised no one has mentioned him as I thought he was one of the best if not the best seen over the past few seasons. He was a no nonsense ref and used the advantage rule impeccably and kept the game flowing, no prima Donna airs about him at all. A good model for others to emulate ESP in this division!
One grey area was the Waggy incident outside the penalty area that wasn't given as a foul. I believe he was fouled but he decided to dive with both feet up in the air - a perfect swallow dive if I ever seen one - that created a doubt that it was faked... Hate it when players over exaggerate the foul...
In any case 9/10 o the ref yesterday!

  • Fully agree. What a difference a Premiership Referee makes.
  • Very difficult to stay on your feet when you've been tripped.
It was a quick break so perhaps the ref was too far behind play to make a clear decision?

Good to see your praise of a referee though - we've seen some horrendously incompetent reffing performances at times this season. But credit where credit is due, is good.
  • Thought he was good but there is no way Waggy, through on goal would have dived. One glaring mistake but you can't get them all right.
  • He did well, especially as he was doing the East Stand Linesman's job for him as well!!
  • We won so the ref always seem to look better. He bottled the Waggy decision, knew someone was going to be sent off so ignored it. We won so didn't change the outcome of the game
  • Best we've had for some time but he did bottle the Waggy thing.
  • Just one mistake but certainly the best ref I've seen at the Valley this season.
  • No the dive was exaggerated thus leaving a doubt whether it was genuine. Waggy had both feet up and both knees bent in mid air, I was in line with that and was damning him for overreacting as if he has a simple tumble, it'd be given.
  • Who was he ?

    Thanks
  • Who was he ?

He was the older fella in the yellow shirt, spent most of his time in the middle of the park and didn't get involved much. Very few touches and no real pace about him, but a decent enough engine.

Can't fault him for effort, then.

True. At one point he made some room for himself and ghosted in at the far post. If only we could've picked him out then he could've grabbed the headlines, but alas not. Always the bridesmaid, refs. Unless your name's Clattenburg that is.
  • I think he only made two decisions that I questioned: Why didn't we get a free kick on the edge of the box in the first half? and one I thought he gave the wrong way at about 65 mins. That's very good going when you think about how many decisions he'd make of the course of 90 mins.
  • I thought he was decent. Regarding the waggy incident, I personally thought that his view was blocked and wouldn't have seen it properly. If he had seen it, he would either have blown for our free kick or for theirs and booked Waggy for simulation. Definite contact but Waggy makes far too much of that type of situation far too often. Annoying trait in the moern game.
  • Completely bottled the Waggy decision but other than that not a lot wrong.
  • I remember comenting on about 60min that he'd only stopped play 3 or 4 times for fouls. Really let th game flow
  • When you don't notice the ref they have done well, it's nice to see an official getting some praise for once.
  • How tall was he ?

  • No surprise that we like a ref when it's a straightforward win. Waggy decision was a shocker, had to be either a red for the Blackpool defender, or a booking for diving.
  • I thought the officials did well yesterday, about time, some of the refs and linos have been dire this season.
  • Agree . I thought exactly the same. It's about time we good a ref who was good at his job.
  • He didn't bottle any thing

Waggs got clipped and stayed on his feet for another step then went down very theatrically

I actually thought he was really dramatic/theatrical, the way he ran over and flung his arms out for the Waggy decision!
  • I wonder if the Arsenal fans are happy with their ref today?

    Ha ha ha!
  • They should be because all the decisions have been right, but that's not how most fans brains work. Wenger's blinkers must be working overtime.
  • Got everything right tbf
  • Thought he was kind to us on several occasions.
  • Of course he got it right - but it wont stop them bleating!
