  • Got them both for xmas, not opened them yet.
I did know that our first Sunday game was at home to Shrewsbury in 1974. I remember going to it :-(
  • Me too. Never appreciated it was a historical moment!
  • But Oggy do you remember Alex Steele being sent off?

    : - )
  • I wonder if the younger lifers know why we played our first sunday so long after joining the league?

Because Charlton fans are devout churchgoers, Henry .

Well, as no one has answered, I thought it was because of the 3 day week & power cuts.
Therefore, clubs couldn't play under the floodlights.
However, that being the case I don't know why the game wasn't played on the Saturday ?

I also remember in those days our crowds were @5,000 & we got about 7,800.

  • i think we also had to be a "member" re going to football on a Sunday-- which i think they gave out at the turnstiles.

Ah yes. I remember that !
I also think I recall that it was a fine sunny day on my 30 min walk to the ground.

    The things we remember.

But think of all the much more important things you've forgotten since!

Slightly off subject but yesterday I spotted Lennie Lawrence's autobiography in Bromley Waterstones for 99p (yes, that's ninety-nine pence!). It's currently £9.59 on Amazon. There were about five copies left in the sports section.

  • Still overpriced to be fair.
    Not one of the best.
  • I was at the Shrewsbury game, was it an early kick off?

Not sure, but I think so. Still don't know why it was played Sunday as opposed to Saturday.
  • Did it kick off at 11.30am?

Was the early kick off something to do with the 3 day working week?

    Probably did.
Yes it was to do with the 3 day week & not being able to use floodlights.
But why play on a Sunday as opposed to a Saturday ?
  • Can only assume it was moved to a sunday as a saturday fixture would have kicked off at 3pm. And yes it was a sunny day.
