The Trouble with Yann

or rather the trouble with those around Yann.

Yesterday there were occasions when Harmer kicked out and Yann headed it on to a Bolton player. Yann could not be blamed as that is all he could be expected to do, but there was no one to take the flick ons.
When we were playing 4-5-1 no one could be expected to take the flick ons so it seemed rather a pointless tactic.
When we went to 4-4-2 the other players just didn't anticipate the flick ons.

I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make except it was frustrating to watch and there must be a better way.

  • You're quite right of course. Whose fault is it ? Yann for flicking it to nobody or his teammates for not being there ?

Probably Powell, because either way, he should have improved things after more than a year.
  • Seemed like our major chances yesterday were created by Yann's feet, playing in players around him with his fantastic eye for a pass. A better midfield would use him better so hopefully in January we'll get a creative force in. In the meantime the more Haynes and Yann play together the more they'll learn to work together. Yann's flicks and Haynes's pace should be a great combination

We have two strikers at the club that are very good in the air. Yann and Rob Hulse. This attribute is woefully wasted because we play with no natural width. Flicks by either in the hope that Danny Haynes can get on the end of one is at best very hopeful.
  • The best football we play is when we forget the hoof ball tactics and play the ball to feet via the midfield. Yann and Hulse can hold the ball up and play people in with intelligent distribution, so why don't we play to our strengths?

No natural width, it's been the problem all season especially at home
  • Yann ended up out wide a lot of the time, sending crosses in for...nobody
  • It's frustrating as Yann can offer so much more than a big presence who is good in the air. Just wish he'd be given more of a chance to show it.
  • The team and Yann certainly need width, but you need a strong centre midfield pair or a sitter in front of
the back four to provide protection for when play breaks down. We have neither, until that changes SCP rightly will play a midfield 5 or a spoiling 4 to try and dog out a result. It's not easy on the eye or creative but without investment it is where we are.

I think Hulse offers a little more than Yann in both formations but neither will prosper as we are not an expansive team due to the weakness in other areas, until then whoever plays will be fighting for scraps.
  • I don't actually think Hulse is very good in the air.
  • Problem is we have no attacking threat out wide, two new wingers needed in jan imo

no, just discussing some our our weaknesses that were obvious to see by anyone who was there yesterday afternoon

    Unbelievable

  • Hulse is decent in the air - by no means an incredible aerial threat, but above average.
