Phil Parkinson Teaser - THE ANSWER

Here is the answer to the Parky teaser I set in another post....

Parky was part of the Reading squad in 1995 that was the only ever team to finish 2nd in the 2nd tier of English football and fail to gain promotion.

It was the year they were reducing the Premiership from 22 teams to 20 teams and that had a knock on effect through the leagues meaning only the team who finished top would go up automatically and that was Middlesbrough. So Reading who finished second any other year would have gone up automatically but in 1995 had to settle for play-off place. They actually made the final at Wembley where they played Bolton and Reading were 2-0 up quite early and had had penalty where they could have gone 3-0 up but the penalty was saved. And in the second half Bolton hit back and got an equaliser in the last 5 minutes and forced extra time and in extra time Bolton went 4-2 up. Reading pulled a late goal back but it was not enough and they lost 3-4 and Bolton went up instead. That season Parky only played a handful of games for Reading as he must have probably had injury problems and he wasn't even in the matchday squad for the game at Wembley but he was there in his suit and I remember watching a clip of that play-off final on you tube and at the end of the game the camera panned in on Parky kneeling on the pitch wearing his suit trying to console a distraught Reading player. It was an image I remember seeing in the paper at the time but wasn't aware it was him at the time.

  • Yep, that's a great fact.
  • Can you start another thread so we can discuss this properly?

From the question " what unique unwanted record does Parky have as player": it is not unique as every member of the squad had the same record.
  • "What unfortunate unique unwanted record does Parky have as player that he shared with the rest of his team mates"

Selective quoting there mate... Are you a journalist?

Although I guess technically you can't share something unique? :-)
  • As a manager he presided over the longest winless streak in Charlton's history, got relegated and kept his job! The worst forrays in to the loan market?
