Can someone who is better than me at maths (thats about everyone) do a thread parraleling Readings promotion run to our own, as it is spookily similar. A match by match update could be interesting.

    Have a couple of graphs
    image

Ignore the labelling on the second graph, should be points not position. Very amateur of me.

    I'll give it a go @maybe_baby

    AFTER FIVE GAMES:

    Reading': W1 D1 L3 ... F5 A6 ... PTS4 ... 20th
    Charlton: W1 D2 L2 ... F4 A5 ... PTS5 ... 21st

    AFTER TEN GAMES:

    Reading': W3 D3 L4 ... F11 A11 ... PTS12 ... 15th
    Charlton: W3 D3 L4 ... F12 A12 ... PTS12 ... 15th

    AFTER FIFTEEN GAMES:

    Reading': W4 D6 L5 ... F15 A15 ... PTS18 ... 16th
    Charlton: W4 D5 L6 ... F20 A23 ... PTS17 ... 19th

    AFTER TWENTY GAMES:

    Reading': W7 D6 L7 ... F23 A22 ... PTS27 ... 11th
    Charlton: W7 D7 L6 ... F26 A24 ... PTS28 ... 13th

It was after the 20th game that Reading really pulled away though, winning 13 of their next 15.
  • Will be astonished if we can match that! But not really expecting to win the league, are we?!

Couple of other parallels from their season to ours:

-Knocked out in Round 1 of League Cup by a L1 team (Reading knocked out by us, we were knocked out by Orient)
-Drawn against a team in third round of FA Cup who won a play-off final the previous May (Reading were knocked out by Stevenage)

Bah, nowhere near as good as colthe3rd! I didnt even the label the graph to show it was points..!

It's amazing how similar our seasons have been so far; us being 1 point ahead - but 2 positions below. That said, the run of form which Reading hit a few more games into the season is nothing short of spectacular.
  • Wait until I get to work and do some regression analysis on that bad boy!*

This thread just considerably raised my expectations for this season
Only for them to be shot back down in a months time im sure.

At this point last season, who was first and how many points did they have?
Wonder if we are further behind than Reading were?

  • Saints were top with 42 points after 20 games, one more than Cardiff this year.
  • WOW thanks everyone...glad to know I'm not the only anorak.
  • If the current squad come close to matching Readings December form then who knows what might happen with a couple of additions in the window?!
Top 2 has to be beyond us but 3 points for a win means top 6 is possible
  • Leave it aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
  • Just take one game at a time and see what happens walk before run

And on Saturday we saw we don't run anymore
  • Stand to win £12,600, we can do this!

    You haven't paid yet Smiiiiiiiiiizeman.
  • Thanks for the graphs guys. Even if matching what Reading did after Christmas might be a bit fanciful, it's great to see our line progressing steadily upwards, both for points and for position.
  • Blimey that would be some effort to win 13 of 15, but so far liking the comparisons. Great graphs/stats guys thanks :)

    Here's another:
    image
So this is looking at the whole season. The orange line is what we would have to acheive from this point to equal Reading's 89 points last season, which from now until the end of the season is 2.3 points per game (ppg).
The purple is what we would need to acheive to make automatic promotion. Using a 6 year average points total for automatic promotion (which I've defined as 3rd place total + 1 point) is 82 points, so from this point to the end is 2.1 ppg.
Finally the red line is what we will acheive using our season ppg to date, so far we are getting 1.4 ppg, take that on to 46 games and it equals a total of 64 points.

As you can see, would be a huge ask to acheive automatic promotion.
  • Absolutely brilliant Colthe...very straight forward for one as thick as I.
  • Great stuff, Col. I'd be quite happy with 64 points this season!
  • Spookily close but can't see it happening - I will be delighted if we can just get top half
  • Big difference is that Reading were taken over in January and were able to buy the likes of Roberts and Le Fondre.

We on the other hand haven't even had a sniff of a takeover

    Agree, Colt .....highly improbable.

One thing, though ...... the past 6 games, we've taken 14 points - and that works out to around 2.3 points per game!
