We've faced the top 5 championship scorers..

... and we've dealt with them all, without conceding one goal to them. In fact the only game we lost was Palarse, and it's arguable that we should've won 4 out of 5 of them. (Birmingham had such a late equaliser and Blackburn were generally outplayed IMO)

1. [18] C. Austin (Burnley) - Burnley 0 - 1 Charlton Athletic (Haynes)
Austin's ratio would be a perfect 1:1 (19 games played, 18 scored as it stands) had he grabbed one against us.

2. [15] G. Murray (Crystal Palace) - Charlton 0 - 1 Crystal Palace (Dikgacoi)

3. [12] M. King (Birmingham) - Birmingham (Zigic) 1 - 1 Charlton Athletic (Cort)

4. [12] J. Rhodes (Blackburn) - Charlton Athletic (Jackson) 1 - 1 Blackburn (Etuhu)

5. [11] T. Ince (Blackpool) - Blackpool 0 - 2 Charlton Athletic (Cort, Solly)

Our defence isn't looking too bad when you look at it like that, is it? ;)

  • Or our defence don't know how to do the simple bits. We concede to lesser players.

Perhaps it's good our defence will be jumbled up for the derby today - what with no Morrison. (Yes, I'm trying to be a little ray of sunshine this morning and no one is going to stop me.)
  • It's deffo down to Powells tactics, pure and simple!
  • After Brighton conceded today, we now have the best away defence in the division.

Wow, Powell has seemed to have ingrained a very good attitude and ethic when it comes to travelling; last year our away form was superb.. Well actually; I think our home form was too.. ;)

Either way, defensively we've achieved a lot in the opening to our Championship Campaign - whilst having to deal with the loss of a LB, playing defenders out of position, integrating new players into the team.. And so on.

Surprisingly, given those issues, it's still our defence that seems the strongest component of our system.

I think a huge well done is deserved to Hamer, Solly, Cort, Morrison - and soon Wiggins - as well as those who have landed in the deep end; Wilson, Seaborne, Dervite and even Evina for his appearance.

  • When you consider- we had to play loads of games without a left back and the best right back in the league playing in that position - you can see that when we can play a balanced defence how it is more than likely to be the best in this league. Seaborne a great bit of business from Sir Chris.
  • To be honest, I am much happier with a tight defence and a few scrappy one-nil wins than I would be with a gung-ho, kamikaze, just score more than they do mentality. Less entertaining to watch maybe but I'd rather stay up pragmatically than heroically fail all guns blazing.
