I thought Diawara was an excellent player - he had a couple of bad games early on where he was adjusting to us playing most of our football in the air and after that he was a rock. One of the best tacklers I've seen and a very capable player.
Astounds me how many of our fans couldn't see his quality.............
I liked Diawara, but never rated El Kakouri. He had a great free kick, always gave 100% but was inept defensively - you were always guaranteed an absolute clanger from him every game....
The Wigan away game was one of those days he'd like to forget though.
To be fair, the wind was blowing almost gale force that day - the ball in the air was totally unpredictable for both sets of players; just that Diawarra got punished twice, when other players' mistakes didn't prove so costly.
Talking of that Wigan game - wasn't that the time Iain Dowie allegedly spent the weekend home with his missus in Oldham, and was late turning up for the game?
Alway's thought that Chris Perry was a decent player for Charlton. Very poor decision to sell him, perhaps he was seen as safe and boring?...... If that is the case, then some of the 'exciting players' that came after, were not very exciting ,and come to think of it much good as players as well.
Always remember Perry marking Crouch out the game when we played Liverpool once although he must have been nearly a foot shorter.
This............with bells on !!
as for Diwarra - I thought he was a decent player but RM got to him with the "best defender you've never heard of" comment" and he then went off the boil. He has since showed his class by winning the French title (twice I think) and consistantly playing in the Champions League
Souleymane Diawara, the man who went on to win 2 Ligue 1 titles at two different clubs since he left us. It's pretty crazy how well he's done after leaving us.
Didn't really rate him when he was here but maybe just couldn't adapt to the English game?

I think he was going through a divorce while he was playing for us.
Perry was great, and is a bit of an unsung hero of that golden era. Andy todd is another one who was pretty good for us but has been a bit forgotten, although he wasn't as good as Perry.
I liked Diawara a lot and thought him and Bougherra were going to be brilliant for us in the Championship, I was really dissappointed when we sold him late in the transfer window. He had a couple of iffy games for us but was generally solid and improved over the season. He got made a bit of a scapegoat for that season, despite probably being Dowie's best signing (Carson was a loan and Reid was never fit).

Defo agree with the andy Todd comment. I thought he was brilliant for us. Obviously tarnished by his off field antics but was always rock solid
Resurrecting an old thread rather than start a new one...Chris has joined our lovely neighbours at the Rusty Toolbox and will be coaching the U15/16 little Spanners.

i always said it anyone who sat with me then would know i thought he had what it took to become a very good defender
his issues were away from football sort those out and the real player wouldve come through

Or something like that.

I haven't heard him say anything about any other player his anger was the inept decision to appoint dowie in the first place

But bless him he has his own thread on here but yet it's been hijacked by the best glove wearing central defender no one has ever heard of.
Jeez.

He also was born in Carshalton, and hates Palace surprisingly!!
I was born in Carshalton and I hate Palace. No surprise, there's so much to dislike about them.
