What's even more criminal than the stack is that he didn't seem to try getting the ball back once he got up! All would have been saved if he had just put a foot in!
He couldn't touch it again without giving an indirect free kick away. Admittedly that would have been better, but he was probably in shock for a moment anyway. Turning an attacking free kick into a defensive situation, in the split second he had to think about it, would have felt like a bad move.

No such thing as an indirect free kick anymore, as far as I'm aware.
I have been that free kick taker, did it in a game out here trying a 'Beckhamesque' delivery from the halfway line and fell arse over tit and shanked it, the ball hit my surprised fellow centre-half on the shoulder as he tried to control it and rebounded towards our goal and the opposition teenage striker raced onto and scored.
