In essence it was part of a marketing campaign in the sixties.

The one enduring thing that came from it was the sword badge.
  • Competition in the 70s.
  • Another memory almost forgotten. There was a competition I think around 1962-3 cos I was still at school. There was initially a prize of a season ticket but there were about 50 winners with 'Valiants', so all we got was a free ticket to the next match.

We are also stuck with "The Valiant 751" or whatever the number is. We are The Addicks to me.

  • looks like you were reading my comment regarding the badge.....
'Was not the sword a design done by a fan...... when we had the idea of calling us Valiants, late 60s/70s'.....
Not quite sure of the connection , except a play on the 'Valley'...... yes/no.?

  • Valiants was a common name in the late 60's when I was at school in Sidcup

  • Stole it from Port Vale in them dark days...
  • Addicks ⇨ Robins ⇨ Valiants ⇨ Addicks, what goes around comes around. Actually I prefer The Valiants; I guess I'm of that age. Also there's something strong, upright and resilient about it.
  • The Valiants was given to us when we where bottom of the league 2 hopelessly adrift in the 60s. Then our new manager came namely Frank Hill. There was an amazing turn around in form whereby we played like champions for the rest of the season including a 6-1 away win at Luton when we rocketed off the bottom of the league. As a result we changed our nickname to the Valiants.I think we finished about 8th from bottom but had we played like that under Hill from the beginning of the season we would have walked the league that year.I remember Hill saying on his arrival "the lads can do it" and they proved him correct.
  • "Tiger" Hill.

    .
  • Frank Hill a real old school type manager who revitalised the team. His biggest coup was to get Eddie Firmani back and gave us some memorable days.

  • Yes getting Firmani back was pivotal to the team's revival.I remember on his return the Tannoy system played "Just like Eddie" by Heinz and produced by Joe Meek when the team came out on the pitch instead of The Red Robin.
  • Remember Eddie coming back to the valley in 1963, Saw it in the Mirror, him getting of a train at Charlton station?...... or so the caption said.
The image has stayed with me to this day, although I have never seen it again. I though he was Italian at first, having played in Italy, it all seemed so stylish.
    Probably my first Charlton hero.

Frank and Eddie. Sunday Express article saying Eddie turned down £10,000 from Lazio to return to 'once depressed SE7' I like the fag in the picture. Happy days!

I thought Eddie came back for the season after we avoided relegation on goal average.

We challenged for promotion that year, 63/4 I think, but faded to 4th.

I remember stuffing Ipswich (first division league champions under Alf Ramsey just a couple of seasons before) 4-0 and Eddie got a hat-trick.

The great Len helped out with a cross or two too.
  • I'm enjoying this history lesson fellas. I've got me Werthers :o)

I have a feeling that Keith Peacock scored his first league goal for the 4th. This was (if I remember) 1965
  • Once a Valiant, always a Valiant......we were The Robins when I first went in 64 and then we changed to the Valiants.....Ive never liked the Addicks myself, but we are stuck with it.

Weren't the white with red shoulder flash shirts all part of the same marketing / image thing as well?
  • We were known as the Valients and The Robins, when I stated supporting us in 72/73.
