Music detracts from pushing yourself to achieve improved performance, week in week out. OK better than watching the telly but ask yourself why are you spending 30 minutes plus out of you waking hours.

With the utmost respect, that is utter, utter bollocks.
Perfect timing for this one as ive just started some early training for next years London marathon and was compiling a running playlist yesterday. Im going for a bit of a mix of chemical bros, prodigy, calvin harris, QOTSA, good old fanshioned bassy rap. Anything with a bit of an angry beat!

I spent 25 years training 6 or 7 days a week sometimes twice a day, 50 weeks a year so I know a bit about mental toughness. I stand by what I say.

Great. So what works for you is what works for everyone else? I guess that's why you never see athletes listening to music whilst training/working out? Oh - wait. You DO see athletes listening to music whilst training/working out. Just because YOU don't listen to music, doesn't mean everyone else is the same. Whatever motivates you, motivates you. If you want to pound along listening to nothing but your heartbeat, breathing and the sounds around you, then that's fine. You're in a minority, but that's fine.
My original comment did have the rider that you need to assess what you want to get out of exercise. Top athletes listen to music waiting for a race but during training? I live near Windsor & Eton athletics ground, see many cyclists out on rides, oarsmen & canoeists on the thames. Never seen earphones. In gym yes, but those types will underachieve.

Its interesting you say that. The years I've spent cycling, I've always had an ear bud in my left ear, just to help kill some of the boredom on long rides. Until the start of this year, I always used to run with ear buds in too. It was only when I ran with my running club for the first time and found I spent most of the time chatting to people running with me that I left the ear buds out. I havent run with music since and have found I'm able to concentrate a lot more and allows me to keep to the pace I want to set pretty much.
However, I know that with marathon training in the not too distant future, runs of over 2hrs are going to need some company as the dark roads are a lonely place and the music is going to help a lot.
Can anyone recommend me some new ear buds? Have been using apple generic ones for the last couple of years but they're dead now. Tried some Klipsch inear ones last night and they were falling out every 10 strides or so, even with a very tight headband on. Anyone gone down the bluetooth headphones route?
Bought some monster isport headphones recently and they tend to stay put pretty well and deliver good sound. Get lots of different bud sizes with them. About £50 on Amazon
