I was expecting the names you gave to be honest and, although i try not to get on any player's back, wouldn't disagree with any of them. I just think that occasionally people get lack of ability mixed up with lack of passion and give a player stick even though they are giving 110% and more. Although the points you make agree with this, as an admitted booer, I just wanted to make sure you weren't slagging off any players unjustly!
Good shout H&G! My point in this thread has always been about spirit and effort over ability!
Whats this notts County game everyone is referring to?
Think it was the 92 or 93 season. We were top of the pile, the year we had the strange squad numbers that went alphabetically from 1 upwards (Balmer number 1). Just thumped Notts County 5-1 at home - and the crowd spent the second half booing Kim Grant for missing a chance. Cue Curbs going (rightly) nuts and ordering the players not to applaud the home support.
We went one down to County at home and they were near, if not bottom, of the league. Grant missed an absolute sitter in front of the covered end from fully 3 yards. The gasps of annoyance from all around I shall never forget. Then as the goalie went to take the goal kick a large chant of off off off came from the CE. It looked as though Grant was crying, although he was about 35 yards away (about the same distance his shot had just missed the goal).
It was shocking but will never beat the "We all agree, Peter Shaw is a wanker" one. Remarkable how he recovered from that and became a collosus at the back in the 80/81 promotion season. In fact, but for his injury in March I think we would have won the league that year. My friends will tell you that I have hated Rotherham (Ronnie Moore, Rodney Fern, John Seasman and Tony Towner et al) ever since for stealing our title that season
In respect of Kim Grant, I don't even think we were losing when that happened because if memory serves, Leaburn equalised just before half time after the referee had cleared it off the line! It was awful and I remember we took the lead shortly afterwards and Stuart Balmer, bless him, giving Kim Grant a big hug as he did look on the verge of bursting into tears. Although he didn't have a glittering career with us, he did come back from that day and stuck around for a few years- Millwall in the snow means he'll always be a hero to me! A pal of mine met him recently at a wedding in Hungary and told him as much-apparently he gets that quite a lot from Charlton fans......
In agreement with an earlier post on this thread, I do feel as though lack of ability and lack of effort do often get mixed up.
For example, the Notts County game last year where they thrashed us 4-2 at home. People booing the players at half time and some even giving Jason Euell a load of stick on Facebook. That thrashing happened as a bit of an anomoly for us, something that all teams get from time to time but nobody really knows how or why it happened. It just did.
We didn't lack effort or passion in that game, as this Charlton side have that in abundance.
I don't think it's acceptable to boo individual players or the team during the game - I don't think this achieves anything. Half time/full time is different though, as I think that it can help to let them know that as a group they have not done enough. It can also can assist the manager if he's trying to make the same point in the dressing room, and hopefully make a difference to the second half/next game.
The only time I can recall it having a positive effect was in the case of Mark Aizlewood. He'd been playing very badly and was getting a lot of stick (and in those days with crowds of 5,000 you could hear individual shouts from the other side of the ground!) It came to a head when he scored a header v Oldham and made a "hand gesture" to the East Terrace. From that moment on, he was transformed (and maybe the supporters were too) and he played really well becoming one of our main players for a couple of seasons. (I think he won player of the year at some point).
I wrote to Kim Grant after that Notts County game as I was so embarrassed by the actions of our fans. Hope Paul wins them over at Brentford he did a good job for us when called upon.
The most disgraceful behaviour to one of our players in my years of supporting. I wrote to him too to apologise for the covered end.
People complain about booing the team (even when sometimes it's deserved) but when it's directed at one player it's really not on.
I wonder if you ever saw Peter Shaw in his early days at Charlton, never heard anything like it when aimed at one of your own players, utter disgrace. His total commitment to the cause led to him winning over most of the idiots & he became a bit of a cult hero.

Doh wrote my comment last night bout PS just noticed i hadn't posted it, did so just now read through other posts & somebody had already mentioned the dreadful abuse of PS ....sorry for duplication
I suspect his team-mates really appreciate what Paul Hayes brings to their side. The Brentford fans ought to ask Wycombe fans whether they'd like to take him back. He won't win many aerial duels or run the channels but he will score some goals himself (like today) and help in the creation of openings for others. If Brentford try to play a bit of football they'll get a lot out of Paul Hayes. If they play long ball then they won't. Good 3rd tier striker.

If he'd been 'hiding' in the match, he would never had been in the right positions to miss those 4 sitters.
So he had a game where nothing went right for him? Every player at every level knows that feeling!
